SALT LAKE CITY, UT — Today’s Utah women’s basketball game against Cincinnati isn’t just another Big 12 matchup in the Jon M. Huntsman Center — it’s a moment in history.

At halftime, the program unveiled a dedicated banner with the number “582” to honor Elaine Elliott, the winningest head coach in University of Utah women’s basketball history.

For decades, Elliott’s name has stood as the bedrock of Utah women’s hoops. From 1982 to 2010, she guided the Utes with a combination of grit and brilliance that built one of the most consistent programs in college basketball.

Her teams posted a 582–234 record (.713) — the most wins in program history — and made 15 NCAA Tournament appearances, including the school’s only Elite Eight.

Elaine Elliott’s banner in the rafters

At tonight’s game, with the Huntsman Center buzzing and the crowd’s eyes fixed on center court, Utah will raise a permanent banner recognizing Elliott’s contributions — a rare honor that cements her legacy for future generations of fans and players to see.

Elliott didn’t just coach — she transformed Utah women’s basketball. Highlights of her career include:

  • 27 seasons as head coach, with 26 winning campaigns
  • 20 seasons with 20+ wins
  • 15 conference championships
  • Elite Eight (2006) and multiple Sweet Sixteen appearances
  • Multiple national and regional coaching honors, including the John and Nellie Wooden National Coach of the Year award in 2001

Under her leadership, Utah became a fixture on the national stage — not just competitive, but respected. Her teams embodied consistency, toughness, and an identity that persists in the program’s culture today.

Five iconic Elaine Elliott moments

1. @Colorado State — Jan. 12, 2007 — 500th Career Win

  • This wasn’t just a number — it was proof of Dynasty. Elliott’s 500th career victory came in a 73–57 win over Colorado State, marking her place among the elite in college coaching. It encapsulated her consistency: 500 wins in the same gym that would later raise her banner.

2. Sweet 16 Run — NCAA Tournament, 2001

  • In the 2000–01 season, a Utah squad led by All-Americans Amy Ewert and Lauren Beckman stormed into the Sweet Sixteen with a 28–4 record — one of the best in program history. This team embodied Elliott’s coach-style: disciplined offense, stifling defense, and clutch play.

3. Elite Eight Heartbreaker — 2006 NCAA Tournament

  • Utah’s program first and only Elite Eight came in 2006. After wins over Middle Tennessee State, Arizona State, and Boston College, the Utes faced Maryland. Trailing late, they had a chance to win with free throws — and came within one free throw of the Final Four. This game wasn’t just iconic; it was legendary.

4.  First NCAA Second Round — 1996–97

  • The 1996–97 squad made program history with Utah’s first EVER NCAA Tournament second-round win. That breakthrough laid groundwork for the national relevance the program would enjoy for years.

5. 16-0 Conference Run — Best Regular Season in Program History

  • In the Mountain West era, Elliott’s team went undefeated in conference play — a rare feat that stands as a testament to her coaching dominance. The Utes’ blend of talent and scheme gave them one of the most unstoppable mid-major seasons of the early 2000s.

The Bottom Line

Elliott’s impact wasn’t only measured in victories (and there were plenty). She helped shape the identity of Utah women’s basketball, developed multiple All-Americans and WNBA draftees, and brought national credibility to a program that had seldom seen it before.

The banner hanging high tonight doesn’t just reflect a résumé — it reflects decades of leadership, loyalty, and legacy.

Utah fans, alumni, and current players will remember tonight not just for the matchup, but for the rightful recognition of one of the program’s foundational figures.
