SALT LAKE CITY – A former quarterback for the University of Utah suffered a broken hand during his first moments on the field with a new program.

Ex-Ute and current Liberty Flames signal-caller Charlie Brewer fractured his hand on Saturday, September 3.

Brewer, who won Utah’s QB1 job to start the 2021 season, earned the right to start the Flames’ season opener against Southern Mississippi.

According to Liberty head coach Hugh Freeze, Brewer broke his hand during the first quarter of action.

Before exiting the game, Brewer ran for 11 yards on 3rd & 15 nearly seven minutes into the contest.

Brewer finished 3/4 passing for 18 yards. He added three carries for 13 yards with his legs. Following his exit, Brewer was seen on the sidelines wearing an arm sling.

The Flames went on to defeat the Golden Eagles after four overtime periods, 29-27.

A day later, The Athletic’s Bruce Feldman reported that the former Utah QB would miss six to eight weeks with the injury.

“SOURCE: Liberty QB Charlie Brewer is expected to be sidelined 6-to-8 weeks with a broken hand suffered in the Flames’ win over Southern Miss SAT,” Feldman tweeted. “Brewer, who has thrown for over 10,000 yards in his career, will undergo surgery this WK to have a pin or plate inserted in his hand.”

Last season, Brewer started the season and led the Utes to a 1-2 record before getting replaced by Cam Rising. During his time at Utah, Brewer threw for 484 yards, three touchdowns, and three interceptions. Shortly after losing his job, Brewer left the Utes’ program. Utah went on to winning the Pac-12 Conference and earning a spot in the Rose Bowl Game. The Utes finished the season with a 10-4 record. In December 2021, Brewer committed to Liberty.

Brewer has played at Baylor, Utah, and Liberty since starting his college career in 2017. He’s thrown for a total of 10,202 yards, 68 touchdowns, and 31 interceptions with a 63.4 completion rate.

Liberty’s next game is against UAB on Saturday, September 10 at 4 p.m. (MDT) on ESPN+.
