SALT LAKE CITY — For about eight minutes, Utah looked like it could survive the storm. For the next 32, Houston showed everyone why its defensive identity travels — and suffocates.

What followed wasn’t a shootout or a back-and-forth heavyweight fight. It was a clinic in defensive control.

The Cougars turned ball pressure into turnovers, turnovers into points, and clean looks into contested heaves, methodically building a lead that never felt fragile in a 66–52 win over the Utes.

First half, Utah vs Houston

Keanu Dawes opened the scoring with a dunk at the 18:43 mark, briefly giving Utah a 2–0 lead. That would be one of the few moments Utah played from in front.

Houston immediately responded with back-to-back threes from Milos Uzan and Emmanuel Sharp, flipping momentum and forcing Utah into halfcourt grind mode.

Utah stayed within reach early. Dawes (13 points on 6-of-10 shooting) was efficient around the rim, and Seydou Traore attacked gaps in transition. At halftime, Utah trailed just 34–25, shooting 46% from the field in the first half .

But the warning signs were already there:

  • Houston hit 7 first-half threes
  • Utah was 1-for-8 from deep
  • Houston’s pressure was compressing Utah’s offensive timing

Second Half: Houston 34, Utah 25

Whatever margin Utah had evaporated in the first three minutes after the break. Houston forced three turnovers on Utah’s first three possessions of the half and converted each into points. Tugler’s steal-and-dunk in transition pushed it to 40–25 and forced an early Alex Jensen timeout.

Utah briefly steadied behind Dawes — another dunk, then a runner in the paint. Kendyl Sanders converted two free throws on a give-and-go. But every small step forward was met with a Sharp three.

Sharp torched Utah’s perimeter switching. When the Utes switched ball screens, the extra half-step of air was enough. He punished it repeatedly, stretching the margin to 48–29 and effectively breaking the game open.

From there, Houston’s defensive pride took over. Possession after possession ended with Utah scrambling late in the clock — near violations, contested floaters, forced kick-outs. The Cougars extended the lead to 53–31 midway through the half and never let the game tighten again.

Traore showed fight — a corner three, a transition push, a split at the line to cut it to 57–41. Brown attacked in transition when cracks appeared. But Houston answered nearly every bucket with one of its own — a putback dunk, a strong finish, a half-court execution that felt clinical.

Houston finished the game with their backups on the floor and finished the night with a 66-52 victory.

Utah’s Offensive Reality

The Utes finished shooting a respectable 44% overall, but that was bolstered by some late buckets.

  • 2-for-17 from three (11.8%)

  • Only 5 free throw attempts

  • Just 0.774 points per possession

You cannot beat Houston shooting 11% from three and giving the ball away 13 times. Dawes was efficient. Traore added 12 points. Brown had 7 points and 3 assists but struggled against Houston’s point-of-attack pressure.

Don McHenry shot 2-for-9 and committed four turnovers. Houston’s guards disrupted Utah’s initiation all night. When Utah moved the ball early in possessions, it generated decent looks. When the ball stuck — which was often — Houston devoured the shot clock.

The Bottom Line

Houston didn’t just beat Utah. It imposed its identity. The Cougars turned defense into offense, dictated tempo without playing fast, and exploited every switching miscue on the perimeter. Utah competed — Dawes brought physicality, Traore attacked gaps, Brown found moments in transition — but the Utes never consistently solved the pressure puzzle.

Against elite defensive teams, execution is difficult but it has to be a major point of emphasis. Utah flashed that execution at times but for the majority of this game, Houston’s defensive dictated terms.
