Byrd Ficklin’s Impressive Debut

Freshman quarterback Byrd Ficklin made a significant impact in his first career start, leading Utah to a dominant 53–7 victory over Colorado.

Ficklin showcased his dual-threat capabilities, rushing for 151 yards and passing for 140, accounting for three total touchdowns. His performance led to Big 12 awards: Offensive Player of the Week and Freshman of the Week.

Coach Whittingham praised Ficklin’s poise and intelligence, noting, “He’s just unflappable. Nothing bothers him, and he is an intelligent young man, extremely intelligent.”

Whittingham also highlighted Ficklin’s athleticism and toughness, emphasizing that the freshman quarterback has the potential to be a cornerstone of Utah’s offense in the coming seasons.

No quarterback controversy, Devon Dampier is QB1

Despite Ficklin’s standout performance, Coach Whittingham reaffirmed that Devon Dampier is still Utah’s starting quarterback.

Whittingham has emphasized that Dampier’s leadership and experience are invaluable to the team’s success.

At the same time, Utah has gained confidence in Ficklin after his performance, and would feel comfortable with him at the helm, if he needs to do that again. Whittingham and staff will approach this week evaluating who simply gives them the best chance at a win.

“The bottom line is, and always will be, which quarterback— which player at any position, for that matter, gives you the best chance at winning,” Whittingham said.

Embracing the ESPN College GameDay Spotlight

With ESPN’s College GameDay coming to Salt Lake City for the first time, Coach Whittingham acknowledged the significance of the event.

He emphasized the importance of staying focused amidst the heightened attention, stating, “It’s a great honor, but our preparation remains the same.”

Saturday’s contest is significant enough on it’s own, players need to stay locked in on the task at-hand.

“The biggest distraction is guys just knowing they’re on the center stage,” Whittingham acknowledged. “But the show is very non-invasive, for the players especially, they get it.”

“It’s good for the program overall in the big picture, the university, the community, state of Utah” Whittingham stated. “But it’s business as usual, we don’t approach it any differently as far as our preparation.”

Cincinnati Bearcats Are a Formidable Opponent

The Cincinnati Bearcats enter this matchup with a 7–1 record, including a perfect 5–0 in Big 12 play. Under head coach Scott Satterfield, the Bearcats have been impressive, especially on offense.

Quarterback Brendan Sorsby has thrown for 1,843 yards and 20 touchdowns, with only 1 interception. The receiving corps, led by Cyrus Allen, has been dynamic, contributing to a balanced offensive attack. Four players—Allen, Caleb Goodie, Joel Royer, and Jeff Caldwell rank between No. 23 and No. 33 in receiving yards per game within the Big 12.

Running back Evan Pryor leads the team with 478 rushing yards, averaging 6.1 yards per carry, however, it seems he may be unavailable this weekend. Sorsby leads the team with 7 rushing touchdowns, while Tawee Walker will assume a bigger role this weekend, has ran for 466 yards and 4 touchdowns.

Defensively, linebacker Jake Golday leads the team with 67 tackles, anchoring a unit that has been effective against both the run and the pass. Cincinnati’s ability to execute in all phases of the game makes them a formidable opponent.
