PASADENA, CA- Pac-12 Network analyst Max Browne broke down a key matchup in tomorrow’s AP Top 25 matchup between #11 Utah and #18 UCLA.

Clark Phillips III put everyone on notice last weekend that he’s one of- if not the best cornerback in the country right now, whereas wide receiver Jake Bobo has proven to be a weapon of choice for UCLA quarterback Dorian Thompson-Robinson. Who wins that battle Saturday afternoon at the Rose Bowl? Browne broke down the film from both player’s games the previous week to give insight into what may happen.

Max Browne Broke Down Utah Versus UCLA

On the year, Jake Bobo has accumulated 21 catches for 363 yards and three touchdowns. He’s also been averaging 17.3 yards per game. Bobo really emerged last weekend though against then #15 Washington pulling in six receptions for 142 yards and two of his three total touchdowns on the season.

Browne explains in his breakdown on Bobo how he runs a post-route while throwing in some variations to keep the cornerback on edge as to where he’s going to end up being on two different plays. Meanwhile, behind center, Thompson-Robinson executes a play fake to the running back while working his eyes left to right across the field. Browne further explains that this is a favorite play of UCLA’s because of the protection it provides DTR as well as the options for weapons to send out. It’s easy to assume Phillips III will likely be tasked with trying to keep tabs of Bobo and these post-routes Saturday afternoon.

While this play gave the Huskies’ cornerback fits, Clark Phillips III has more than proven he’s no slouch and will be ready. In the young 2022 season, Phillips III has 10 total tackles and four interceptions, one of which is a pick six. Phillips III’s interception total for the season is currently tied for first in the country.

Browne’s breakdown of Phillips III mostly focuses on his instincts on the play. Browne notes that Phillips III keeps his eyes on the quarterback through the whole play while “feeling” where the receiver is headed so that he can essentially determine when to become the “receiver” on the play.

Bobo isn’t the only great wide receiver the Utes and Phillips III will be facing in the coming weeks. Phillips III will also have to deal with #6 USC’s Jordan Addison next weekend when Utah hosts the Trojans at Rice-Eccles Stadium.
