Report: Pac-12 Expected To Eliminate Redshirt Year For Intra-Conference Transfers

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – According to reports, the Pac-12 is expected to eliminate the redshirt year for undergraduates that transfer within the conference.

This would make the transfer immediately eligible to play at their new Pac-12 school and eliminate the redshirt season. The rule would apply only to student-athletes that transfer from a Pac-12 school to another program in the conference as an undergraduate. Graduate transfers are already immediately eligible.

This will be on top of allowing student-athletes to go to schools within the conference, which means the coaches cannot limit the transfer to what school they can’t go to.

Jon Wilner of the San Jose Mercury News reported that the Pac-12 “will only move forward if the NCAA provides cover.” The NCAA is expected to rule on allowing first-time transfers immediate eligibility.

For years there was limitations to transfers. The coach could list the programs that the transfer could not go to. This would normally consist of conference opponents and non-conference opponents that are on the schedule for the near future. Commissioner Larry Scott eliminated that rule over the last couple of years.

This would basically allow former Utah wide receiver Bryan Thompson to be eligible immediately for Arizona State. That was probably going to be the case anyway because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
