SALT LAKE CITY – The 12th-ranked University of Utah football team got revenge after a blowout 42-16 win over Oregon State at home on Saturday.

Cam Rising had a strong performance by completing 19 of his 25 pass attempts for 199 yards and three touchdowns. He also ran the ball seven times for 73 yards and a score.

On defense, star cornerback Clark Phillips III shined with three interceptions, including two in the first quarter and the second one was a pick-six.

First Quarter

Oregon State started the game with the ball. QB Chance Nolan tried to connect with one of his receivers when Clark Phillips ripped the ball away. Three plays later, Cam Rising threw a fade to Jaylen Dixon for a 19-yard touchdown. That gave Utah a 7-0 lead with 13:03 remaining in the first quarter.

Oregon State got the ball back and was able to get a 29-yard touchdown run by Silas Bolden, ending a seven-play, 79-yard drive. The game was tied at seven with 9:36 remaining in the first quarter.

After Oregon State scored on their next possession, Utah’s defense made them pay on the third drive. Chance Nolan threw to his wide receiver when Clark Phillips III used his speed and athleticism to jump the route and intercept the pass.

The All-Pac-12 performer took the ball 38-yards for a touchdown to give the Utes a 14-7 lead with 7:21 remaining in the opening quarter. In Phillips’ tenure with the Utes, he has recorded a pick-six in every season.

Second Quarter

Cam Rising found the open field on the left side before shaking off defenders and finding the end zone on a 24-yard touchdown. That gave Utah a 21-7 lead with 4:13 remaining in the second quarter.

It’s the first rushing touchdown of the season for Rising and the first rushing score of the game against Oregon State. Utah had a pick-six and a passing TD before Rising ran in a score.

Minutes later, Oregon State made a 26-yard field goal to trim the deficit to 21-10 with 9:38 remaining in the first half.

Oregon State was able to get the ball back and backup QB Ben Gulbranson connected with Tre’Shaun Harrison for a 63-yard pass to the Utah five-yard line. Utah’s defense held the Beavers out of the end zone but OSU was able to get a 26-yard field goal. The Utes held a 21-13 lead heading into the halftime break.

Third Quarter

Utah was forced to punt on the first drive of the second half. Oregon State was able to get into the red zone but settled for a 31-yard field goal. The Utes had a 21-16 lead with 9:46 remaining in the third.

After sputtering early in the third quarter, Utah’s offense got a boost by Rising both through the air and on the ground, which ended in a 16-yard TD pass to Vele.

That play extended Utah’s lead to 28-16 with 6:18 left in the third quarter. It’s the 12th touchdown pass of the season for Rising and the third TD grab in 2022 for Vele.

Oregon State backup quarterback Ben Gulbranson threw the ball to the end zone with RJ Hubert picking it off. Hubert took the ball for 70 yards. Two plays later, Cam Rising had a fake handoff to the running back before handing the ball off to Jaylen Dixon on the end-around play. Dixon took it 22 yards for a touchdown.

That play gave Utah a 35-16 lead with 1:57 remaining in the third quarter. It’s the second interception this season for Hubert, who had a pick-six against Southern Utah in the home opener. Dixon ran in his second touchdown of the season and also had a receiving TD in the first quarter against OSU.

Fourth Quarter

Utah’s defense stopped Oregon State on fourth down. Five plays later, Rising found Kincaid for a four-yard touchdown to give the Utes a 42-16 lead with 12:38 remaining in the game.

It’s the 13th touchdown pass of the season for Rising. Against Oregon State, Rising completed 17 of his 23 pass attempts for 169 yards and three touchdowns. He also ran the ball seven times for 73 yards and a score. Kincaid was up to three catches for 17 yards and a TD.

Utah improved their record to 4-1 overall and 2-0 in Pac-12 play. They will hit the road to face UCLA on Saturday, October 8. The game will begin at 1:30 p.m. MT on FOX or FS1.
