SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – Months after being reinstated to the program, Utah defensive coordinator Morgan Scalley has become the biggest advocate of learning and understanding other cultures.

Morgan Scalley was suspended from the Utah football team in June of 2020 for using a racial slur in a text message in 2013. Utah reinstated Scalley in July of 2020 and had to agree to stipulations upon his return.

Utah football linebacker Devin Lloyd and cornerback Clark Phillips III joined KSL Sports for a live stream to discuss important topics surrounding Black History Month. Both players were asked about how the coaches support the players to create change. Phillips said that Scalley was the biggest advocate of learning other cultures.

“Personally, it seems like they’ve been probably the best in terms of just taking the educational piece to another level,” Phillips said. “Coach Scalley has really the biggest advocate in the defensive room for just learning first, and from an educational standpoint of just understanding the culture, then teaching the guys the culture. He’s had a couple of PowerPoints for us to watch in our defensive meeting rooms. Then of course, Coach (Sharrieff) Shah, guys like that, have made it a lot easier for guys to feel comfortable having those conversations in the room.”

Devin Lloyd agreed with what Phillips said about Scalley and the coaching staff and elaborated on that.

“They’ve been really supportive, ever since everything started,” Lloyd stated. “Even when we initially brought up doing the march during the spring, they were supportive of that, and they’ve been supportive of us this entire time. Of course, Clark was talking about teaching us and just informing us on different cultural topics. I think they’ve been doing a great job. It starts with Coach Scalley. All the coaches, a part of the coaching staff are really onboard with everything that is coming with all of this. I would definitely say they’ve been supportive. I’m just grateful that they have.”

The football team and other sports teams within Utah Athletics led a march to Capitol Hill in Salt Lake City last year. Lloyd and Phillips were leaders of that march.
