SALT LAKE CITY — Utah football’s second official visit weekend is starting to look like a real momentum swing. The Utes have landed a commitment from wide receiver Dillon Sykes, giving Utah its fourth commitment from the weekend group of visitors and adding another offensive piece to the 2027 recruiting class.

For head coach Morgan Scalley and his staff, the commitment continues an important June run. Utah has already turned official visits into movement across multiple position groups, and Sykes’ pledge gives the Utes a receiver addition at a spot where the program has been trying to keep building talent and depth.

It is also an early win for wide receivers coach Chad Bumphis.

After Utah added offensive lineman Damian Anyasodo, tight end Braxton Daniel and safety/linebacker Aiden Martin from the same weekend group, Sykes gives the class another layer. More importantly, he gives Utah a receiver prospect who fits the type of room Bumphis is trying to construct.

Utah’s big weekend turns into more momentum

Official visits are about impressions, but the real measure comes after recruits leave campus. For Utah, this second weekend has delivered in a big way.

The Utes have now added four commitments from the visitor group, a strong return at a critical point in the recruiting calendar. June is where classes start to take shape, and Utah has quickly moved from hosting prospects to stacking pledges.

Recruiting runs can build on themselves. One commitment validates the weekend. Two starts to create buzz. Three makes it a trend. Four turns it into something the staff can sell to the next group of targets.

The Utes also hosted offensive lineman Tye Kennedy, receiver Ake O’Neal, edge Jag Iaone, and quarterback Brody Rudnicki, and Utah has a positive buzz around each of them as well.

Dillon Sykes adds to Chad Bumphis’ receiver room

Sykes’ commitment is significant because Utah’s receiver recruiting has been an important storyline under the current offensive staff.

The Utes have wanted to make the receiver room more dynamic, more competitive and more equipped to support a passing game that needs to keep evolving. That does not mean Utah is suddenly trying to abandon its identity. The program will still be built around toughness, balance and physical football.

But the offense needs receivers who can create separation, win matchups and give the quarterback more answers. That is where Sykes fits.

Bumphis has been tasked with continuing to raise the level of the receiver room, and Sykes gives him another player to develop in that vision. Utah needs wideouts who can grow into reliable targets, handle the physicality of Big 12 football and bring enough athletic ability to stretch the field or create after the catch.

Sykes gives the staff another piece in that process.

For a young receiver, fit matters. Utah can sell opportunity, but it also has to sell development. Bumphis’ role is important because he has to show receivers how they will be coached, where they can improve and how they can eventually carve out a role in the offense.

Sykes’ commitment suggests that message landed.

Scouting Report: Receiver with tools to mold

From a scouting standpoint, Sykes gives Utah a receiver prospect with traits the staff can work with. At 6-foot-5, 190 pounds, there’s a big potential to develop.

He projects as an outside wideout who can continue to grow into his role as he adds polish, strength and consistency. The key with a prospect like Sykes is not viewing him only through what he is right now, but what he can become once he gets into a college strength program and spends time in a structured receiver room.

Sykes has the kind of frame and athletic profile Utah can develop over time. He shows the ability to consistently get vertical and win deep downfield. That is where Utah’s passing attack can really grow under Bumphis and McGiven.

He shows the ability to get of the line, to separate, and properly track the football and handle contested situations. Sykes showcases the ability to operate deep down the field, despite not being a blazing fast receiver, he eats up ground with his strides.

Utah’s job is to refine the route-running, strengthen the releases, build consistency and help him become a complete receiver. Bumphis now has another prospect to bring into that pipeline.

Another piece in Utah’s offensive build

Sykes’ commitment also fits the broader direction of the class. Utah’s recent run has leaned heavily toward offensive structure. The Utes have added players up front, added a tight end and now added a receiver. That gives the staff a foundation to keep building around as the cycle continues.

It also reflects how Utah wants to support its future quarterbacks. A strong offense is not built by one position group. It requires protection, matchup pieces, perimeter threats and enough depth to survive a Big 12 schedule. Sykes gives Utah another player who can contribute to that bigger picture.

For the receiver room specifically, this is about stacking options. Utah has been working to improve its pass-catching talent, and every class has to contribute to that effort. Sykes gives the Utes another young player to develop, another personality to bring into the room and another chance for Bumphis to put his stamp on the position group.

That matters as Utah continues trying to modernize its offensive ceiling without losing the physical edge that has defined the program.

The Bottom Line

Dillon Sykes’ commitment gives Utah its fourth pledge from the second weekend group of official visitors and adds another offensive piece to the 2027 class.

For the Utes, this is a meaningful recruiting win because it keeps the momentum rolling.

Anyasodo gave Utah another offensive line commitment. Daniel added an athletic tight end. Martin brought defensive versatility. Now Sykes gives Bumphis a receiver to develop in a room that remains important to the future of Utah’s offense.

That is a strong return from one visitor weekend. Utah still has a long way to go in the 2027 cycle, but the early movement is exactly what the staff needed. Official visits are supposed to create energy, urgency and commitments. Right now, Utah is getting all three.
