SALT LAKE CITY—As Utah football approaches the midway point of spring ball, progress is being made, and Caleb Lomu is a prominent figure in that development.

Utah’s starting left tackle is coming off of a stellar Freshman All-American campaign and is looking to build on that in year two.

Expectations are high for him, yet he’s focused on simply helping the team improve and achieve its goals this season.

Caleb Lomu and the O-Block are enjoying the new offense

“We have a lot of options; with Devon in the backfield, he can run, he can throw, he can make whatever happen,” Lomu said. “The diversity we have with the offense, I really like; last year we were kind of limited.”

Jason Beck has brought a fun offensive scheme to Salt Lake City. With an emphasis on the run game and the option attack, Utah’s offensive line is really well-equipped to execute.

“I think it’s allowed our guys a little more flexibility in the run game, in terms of getting them out in space, pulling and things like that,” Jim Harding said of the fit between the scheme and his linemen.

Utah brought back all five starters along the offensive line, plus key depth behind them. Lomu not only likes where the group is but also embraces what it means to have everyone back.

“The chemistry that we have is amazing,” Lomu said. “We’re the most veteran group on the offensive side, and we know everyone’s looking to us to lead the offense, and we want that role as an O-line, we want to lead the offense.”

Promising trajectories for Utah football starting offensive tackles

As Lomu enters his second season as the starting left tackle, his focus is simple: get better.

“Just improve, kind of compared to Spencer, who had a huge jump from year one to year two, so I’m hoping to have as big of a jump as he had,” Lomu said. “Being a leader on the team. Doing as much as I can to lead the team to our bigger goals.”

Coach Harding sees the potential and believes Lomu is not only on the same trajectory but needs to make the same improvements as Fano did going into his second year.

“Where Spencer really made a lot of improvement in year two was how physical he was,” Harding said. “It wasn’t just about doing your job, but rather how can I look dominant doing that job, and that’s my challenge to Caleb.”

If Lomu matches the leap Fano made, Harding believes Lomu will have the opportunity to make the leap to the next level.

“That’s been the focus with Caleb since coming back in January,” Harding said. “If he makes the same jump that Spencer did from year one to year two, I think he has an opportunity to decide whether to come back or declare for the NFL Draft, and I don’t think that’s something to shy away from.”

Impressed by Utah football’s new signal caller, Devon Dampier

The two hail from Arizona and actually competed against one another. That connection is only a small part of why Lomu is so excited to have Dampier at the helm.

“I played him in high school, he killed us, of course,” Lomu said. “I’ve known Devon for a little, now that he’s here, I love having him here, he’s brought a great spirit to the team.”

Utah’s new signal caller was the prized addition of the winter transfer portal window. His experience in the offense was believed to be the big reason why he was so important. However, it seems his leadership has provided much more value already.

“He came in and was voted to the leadership council after three weeks, so that shows how much of a leader he is,” Lomu said. He brings great energy to the team, we all enjoy being around him and all love him.”
