SALT LAKE CITY — The Utes pick up their fourth commitment of the weekend, as Monterey (Lubbock, TX) defensive lineman Javion Ramon has pledged to Kyle Whittingham’s Utah football program.

He was part of the final group of official visitors, who wrapped up their trips this weekend. He now becomes Utah’s 10th commit of the class.

Defensive lineman Javion Ramon commits to Utah football

In a game where evaluators are everywhere, it’s become harder and harder to find the diamond-in-the-rough type of prospects. However, that perfectly describes Ramon and his current recruiting profile.

He is unrated and unranked across the industry, and only has offers from Baylor, UTEP, and Utah.

However, he’s been a big priority for Utah since they officially offered him May 1, and for good reason. At 6-foot-6, 250 pounds, Ramon has a tremendous frame and promising athletic qualities for the trenches.

Last season, Ramon tallied 63 tackles, including four for a loss, two sacks, and a blocked punt for a touchdown. He primarily played defensive end, yet has committed to Luther Elliss and the defensive tackle room.

Ramon was part of the group that included five-star OT Felix Ojo, four-star WRs Jaron & Kennan Pula, three-star DB Aisa Galea’i, three-star WR Perrion Williams, DB Dylan Waters, and three-star OL Rowdy Pearce.

He becomes Utah’s tenth commit of the class, joining running back LaMarcus Bell, edge Prestion Pitts, quarterback Michael Johnson, linebacker LaGary Mitchell, cornerback Major Hinchen, safety Carter Stewart, tight end Bear Fisher, receiver Perrion Williams, and offensive lineman Rowdy Pearce.

How does Javion Ramon fit with Utah football?

Ramon boasts the dream build for a defensive lineman—he’s 6-foot-6 with a well-proportioned 250-pound frame, leaving plenty of room to pack on additional strength.

He currently plays in a system that allows him to attack the line of scrimmage freely. That shines a light on his disruptiveness and ability to make plays in the backfield.

His long arms let him stack and shed blockers, though he will need to become more consistent with that at the next level. He is often able to utilize his leverage to disengage from blockers and re-route to the ball.

Ramon already shows impressive quickness at the line and flashed a variety of pass-rush techniques—each one shows promise, but again, need to become more consistent and polished.

Becoming a stronger player will really solidify his projection at defensive tackle. Adding muscle will only amplify his burst off the snap and his ability to hold his ground and collapse the pocket. Ramon has the frame to quickly add the mass necessary without impacting his athleticism.

All in all, this is a really exciting addition for Utah’s defensive tackle. His recruiting profile will catch up to the promising player he truly is. This is a genuine good deep find for the Utes, and a callback to the staff’s ability to identify quality defensive line prospects.
