SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – After Utah football tragically lost defensive back Aaron Lowe, the program received a motivating message to keep playing this season.

The Utah football team could’ve just ended the season after losing their second teammate in a nine-month span but they received the motivation needed to keep playing this season.

Last week, Aaron Lowe’s mother spoke to the team. Utes wide receiver and captain Britain Covey talked about the message that she told the team.

“Having Aaron’s mom come and talk to us and tell us to continue on because that’s what he would want,” said Covey. “That was kind of the the last thing that we needed before we could really do it. So I think that that was what helped the most was having his mom tell us to go on and dominate the rest of the season. That helped, because now you feel like you’re going out there with a bigger purpose. We’ve got a couple tributes that we do during practice, things like that to Ty (Jordan) and Aaron. I think that, it helps you play for something bigger than you.”

Earlier in the day on Monday, Kyle Whittingham was asked if any of his players chose to not play as they continued to grieve.

“Nobody’s mentioned that and we had two team meetings so we had one on Sunday when when we just learned the event,” said Whittingham. “That was the first team meeting that we had and we had a team Leadership Council meeting Sunday night because I wanted to get the feedback from the leaders and how we were going to move forward and what the plan was and make sure that coaches and players were all on the same page.”

Utah will head to Los Angeles to face the USC Trojans on Saturday, October 9 at 6 p.m. MT on FOX.
