Texas Tech Vs Utah For Week 4: Game Preview, Score Prediction

Sep 19, 2025, 6:57 PM | Updated: 6:59 pm

SALT LAKE CITY —The stage is set in Salt Lake City for a top-20 clash that doubles as the Big 12 opener for Utah and Texas Tech. Here’s a game preview and score prediction for the Saturday morning contest.

Kyle Whittingham and his Utah football program welcome Joey McGuire and the Texas Tech Red Raiders to Rice-Eccles Stadium.

FOX’s Big Noon Kickoff is on campus, around 20 NFL scouts are expected to be in attendance, and two quarterbacks on the early Heisman watch list will duel on the same field.

The Stakes in the Big 12 Race

Utah is looking to protect its home field and re-establish itself as one of the top contenders in the country. Meanwhile, the Red Raiders, a program that has been fairly competitive in the Big 12, are hoping for a statement upset of the Utes.

For Texas Tech, the implications are straightforward: win in Salt Lake City, and the Red Raiders sit in the driver’s seat for the Big 12 title race. Their remaining schedule doesn’t feature the same minefield of contenders that Utah faces, and a road statement in Week 4 would put them firmly on course for December.

For Utah, this game carries even more urgency. The Utes’ path is tougher, and banking a head-to-head tiebreaker over Tech could prove decisive down the line. It would also serve as a valuable win for the Utah brand and its recruiting efforts.

Spotlight players and NFL Draft stock

Plenty of eyes will be on quarterback Devon Dampier, whose Heisman odds slipped slightly last week simply because he wasn’t in the national spotlight. That changes Saturday. On the other sideline, Texas Tech’s Behren Morton has his own Heisman chatter and the chance to prove he can lead the Red Raiders to contender status.

But the juiciest matchup for NFL evaluators comes in the trenches: Utah’s offensive tackles Spencer Fano and Caleb Lomu against Texas Tech’s edge defenders, particularly Romello Height and David Bailey.

Scouts love nothing more than elite edge talent battling future pro tackles, and this game offers just that. With 20 scouts projected in the building, reputations — and draft boards — are on the line.

Utah vs Texas Tech: The Winning Recipe

This will be the first real test for both teams. This is a strength vs. strength matchup, as Utah’s offensive line will face off against Texas Tech’s defensive line, which will be the big talking point for the game.

  1. Establishing the run: Utah has pounded the football for nearly 300 yards per game, while Texas Tech has barely given up 12o total through three games. Something has to give. Utah’s line has been elite — lowest rate of blown blocks in the conference — but Tech’s athleticism up front is unlike anything they’ve seen so far. The Utes have to establish control of the line of scrimmage and continue creating lanes for the run game.
  2. Defensive secondary has to be physical: The Red Raiders have scored 14 passing touchdowns this year, nine from 20 yards or more. Utah must eliminate the big plays, force Morton to sustain drives, and win the physicality battle at the line of scrimmage, particularly to start Texas Tech possessions. A big part of Leftwich’s offense is success on 1st downs, and Morton has thrown for 413 yards on 1st downs alone.
  3. The QBs:  Morton is efficient when clean, shaky when pressured. Dampier is the opposite kind of problem — a dual-threat who has handled pressure well. Generating pressure on Morton will be key, while Utah’s offensive tackles have to keep Dampier upright in the pocket.

Utah vs Texas Tech Score Prediction

Utah vs. Texas Tech isn’t just another ranked game — it’s a statement opportunity for both programs. It’s a recruiting showcase and a battle with championship implications. If Utah controls the trenches and Dampier delivers in his first true national spotlight moment, the Utes can emphatically seize their Big 12 opener.

Projected Score: Utah 34, Texas Tech 27
