SALT LAKE CITY- Utah currently sits at 1-2 on the road in 2022. On offense, quarterback Cam Rising and wide receiver Devaughn Vele both recognize they need to start fast and execute on the road against Washington State on Thursday. Neither player is taking the Cougars for granted despite their recent struggles and know WSU’s defense will give them a fight.

We Need To Execute

Vele was adamant the Utes just need to go out and execute on Thursday night against the Cougars and not pay their crowd any mind. Slow starts against Florida and UCLA are where Vele sees deficiencies that have led to losses this season but feels if the offense can get going immediately at Martin Stadium Utah can walk away with a win.

“With a hostile environment, sometimes we let the crowd get into our heads,” Vele said. “We know if we just stick with the game plan given by our coaches and just execute, I feel like the biggest thing is just execution. We feel comfortable at home, we have the fan base behind us, but when you are in a hostile environment, it’s a lot different. Execution-wise we just need to be a lot better and start faster. Especially at Florida and UCLA we started off slow and had to find our footing, but by then it was too late.”

Looking At WSU’s Defense

Rising recognizes WSU’s defense will want to disrupt his game from film study and knows it will be a big challenge not just for himself, but everyone on offense to keep the chains moving Thursday night. It will take a collective effort by every piece in the offense to have success against the Cougar’s defense.

“They do a pretty good job disrupting the quarterback and making it hard for them to stay in the pocket,” Rising said. “I know it’s going to be a challenge for the o-line and all of the receivers to make sure they can get out and get open fast.”

Making the challenge more difficult is Washington State has defensive ends on both sides of their line that really get after it. Rising says he’s going to have to watch his blindside in Thursday’s contest in order to be effective.

“They have some great players over there and really do a good job just disrupting and trying to make the quarterback uncomfortable,” Rising said. “It’s going to be a fun battle.”
