SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – The Utah football team showed that they can throw the ball more frequently in their 40-17 win over Weber State in the 2021 season opener.

Charlie Brewer shined in his debut by completing 19 of his 27 pass attempts for 233 yards and two touchdowns. The Utes ran the ball 31 times and threw 29 times in the win over the Wildcats.

Plenty Of Weapons For Brewer In Passing Game

Brewer had a lot of guys make plays in the passing game, completing passes to eight different receivers. Dalton Kincaid led the way with four receptions for 75 yards and two touchdowns. Head coach Kyle Whittingham was pleased with his performance.

“Dalton Kincaid is I think the best kept secret in the Pac-12,” Whittingham stated. “I was saying that in camp, and I’ve said it in several interviews and I think you saw tonight what he can do. Tremendous athlete, great size, speed for a tight end and he’s the whole package. He’s a weapon for us and he continues to play like he did tonight, he’ll get more and more touches and more and more reps.”

Solomon Enis and Britain Covey each caught four passes. Enis racked up 62 yards and a touchdown, while Covey had 14 receiving yards.

Also, Theo Howard, Micah Bernard, Thomas Yassmin and Jaylen Dixon caught passes.

Utah Has ‘Laundry List’ Of Things To Work On

While Utah did some things well in their season opener, Kyle Whittingham had a long list of things they need to work on. Here is the list that Whittingham mentioned with the mistakes the team made.

  • Allowed a kick return for a touchdown
  • Dropped a touchdown pass (was really two)
  • Burned a timeout on a field goal attempt with just 10 guys on the field
  • Had 10 guys on the field on a tight end run
  • Missed a PAT, which was farther back due to a delay of game penalty

It is the first game and it’s common to see a lot of mistakes on the field but fans should be excited about what’s ahead for Utah football if they can correct those mistakes.

Utah will head to Provo to face rival BYU on Saturday, September 11. Kickoff is at 8:15 p.m. MDT on ESPN.
