SALT LAKE CITY- Utah wide receiver coach Chad Bumphis announced Wednesday morning he is leaving Utah after two seasons. Bumphis has yet to say where he is headed but going back to his alma mater at Mississippi State seems to make the most sense and was first reported by Adam Rittenberg of ESPN.

Bumphis first came to the Utes in 2018 as a graduate assistant and really made an impression on the program. Unfortunately, at the time Utah didn’t have the space to keep him on staff and he was encouraged to go find other opportunities.

Over the next two years, Bumphis would sharpen his coaching skills at Austin Peay and had taken a job with Central Michigan before the Utes came calling. Bumphis ultimately came back to the program after former wide receiver coach Guy Holliday was let go.

Thankful To Be A Ute

Bumphis expressed a ton of gratitude to be back in Utah as the wide receivers coach two years ago when he was hired.

“I was in Michigan for 14 days,” Bumphis said. “I just gotten there. I’m getting to know the players and and what’s funny for me is I had been in touch with Coach Whitt (Whittingham). So I’m just updating him on how my career was going, where I was, because I knew at some point I wanted to be back here. So I always stayed in touch with him. When I got the Central Michigan job, we actually talked and he congratulated me just telling me stay in touch. Two weeks later, this job came open. I reached out to him, reached out to some of the guys on the offense just to see what what he was looking for, if they had an idea of which direction it would go, and it worked out. So that Thursday, I interviewed and Saturday morning, I was on a plane. So it worked out just like I wanted basically.”

Bumphis’ exit from Utah expressed the same sentiments as when he was hired back as the wide receiver coach.
