SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – The Utah women’s basketball team thumped Arizona 80-64 in a matchup of two teams with stellar 12-1 records to start the season.

It was thought that the game would be highly competitive and may even have gone down to the wire like the Utes’ 65-63 loss to Arizona State on Friday.

It was not.

Big Win For Utah

Utah rolled out to a 28-15 first quarter lead. Kiana Moore’s 3-pointer at the 4:17 mark sparked a 16-6 run to end the quarter and get the rout going.

Things only got worse for the Wildcats as the Utes built a 25-point lead in the second quarter, taking a 51-26 lead into halftime.

The rout reached its critical mass in the third as Megan Huff’s and-one basket and a made free throw gave Utah a 65-35 lead at the end of the quarter.

Arizona managed to cut into the huge Utah lead in the fourth and made the final 16-point deficit much more palatable.

Moore Dominates From Deep

Moore had a career day, scoring 19 points on five made 3-pointers.

After the game, she said she played especially hard in an attempt to replace teammate Daneesha Provo, who was injured in the loss on Friday.

“I know Deneesha went down last game so a lot of that was just do it for her,” said Moore. “I was playing her position tonight at the three-guard, so I knew I had to step in her place and make good plays just like she makes great plays.”

Next Up

The Utes will travel to face Washington State Friday at 8 p.m. The game will be broadcast on the Pac-12 Network.
