PROVO, Utah – After an upset loss to BYU on Saturday night that saw Utah’s nine-game streak over the Cougars end, Utes head coach Kyle Whittingham is moving forward to their main goal.

That’s to win a Pac-12 championship which the loss to BYU does not impact when it comes to the standings.

‘The message was we’re disappointed,” Whittingham said after the game. “We didn’t play as well as we’re capable of playing, I can tell you that for certain. But again, I’m not trying to take away anything from their victory because they earned it. But that was not our best football. Gotta pick ourselves up off the mat and got a lot of football ahead of us. This has nothing to our ultimate goal of trying to win the Pac-12 which obviously is going to be very, very challenging but we got to just pick ourselves up and figure out what we did wrong and get better and move forward.”

Utah squandered a great opportunity to make history in the rivalry game if they had won their 10th straight win, which would’ve been the most on either side of the rivalry in its history.

The Utes will look to bounce back on Saturday, September 18 against San Diego State in Carson, California. Kickoff is at 5:00 p.m. MDT on CBS Sports Network.
