Weber State Wins Double Overtime Thriller Against Idaho State

POCATELLO, Idaho – The Weber State Wildcats traveled to Reed Gym to take on the Idaho State Bengals on Saturday.

The Wildcats last game was a loss to Eastern Washington on the road, 75-71. The Bengals last game was a 4-point win over same-state foe, the Idaho Vandals.

Heading into this matchup, the Wildcats and Bengals held the 3rd and 4th spots in the Big Sky conference.

First Half

Dyson Koehler scored the first basket of the night for the Wildcats.

After the Bengals responded with their own three, Steven Verplancken Jr. converted an and-one play.

Both teams had shooting struggles early on. Idaho State got much of its work done inside the arc.

Halfway through the first half, the score was tied 12-12.

Steven Verplancken Jr. was the leading scorer for Weber State early.

The Wildcats went on a run late in the first half, scoring on 5 of 6 field goals.

Zahir Porter got a steal and ran the break.

Wildcats led at the half, 24-21.

Second Half

Dillon Jones opened up the second half with a steal and fastbreak layup.

Jones was injured on the play and was subbed out on the next possession.

Idaho State was able to build some momentum from deep. They hit 3-straight threes to take their first lead of the second half.

Weber State later answered with a three to take the lead right back.

Dillon Jones was able to return to the court.

The Bengals were able to force turnovers and score in transition on multiple possessions.

Junior Ballard hit a three to keep the Wildcats in front.

Idaho State tied the game on multiple possessions but the Wildcats answered to regain the lead each time.

The Bengals took a one-point lead with 3 minutes left in the game.

After Weber State took the lead back, the Bengals hit a three that made the home crowd roar.

With 90 seconds left, the score was tied at 50.

After Idaho State took the lead off of two free throws, Dillon Jones got a powerful slam to tie the game at 52 with 13 seconds left.

The Bengals missed their last-second attempt.

Overtime

Idaho State opened up overtime with a free throw trip on two straight possessions.

After going down 4, the Wildcats hit a big three.

Dillon Jones got a late and-one to tie the game.

The Bengals got to the free throw line with 40 seconds left and took a 2-point lead.

Junior Ballard froze the defender with a hesitation move and got to the rim for the layup, 64-64.

The Bengals and Wildcats both missed in the final seconds of overtime.

Second Overtime

Weber State took a 1-point lead after the Bengals hit 1 of 2 free throws on their first possession.

After the first two minutes of 2OT, the score was tied at 66.

The Wildcats took a 1-point lead with a minute left off of a putback slam.

The Bengals took the lead right back with two free throws.

Dillon Jones got to the line for Weber State to make it 70-69. Jones was the second-leading scorer for the Wildcats with 16. Ballard led with 20.

After Idaho State took the lead on a late layup, Dillon Jones got straight to the rim and put it in for the win.

Wildcats come out on top, 72-71.
