SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – Tom Brady’s debut with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers was pretty much an average performance in his opener with his new team. He completed 23 of 36 passes for 239 yards with two passing and one rushing touchdown, plus a pair of interceptions.

There are people who want to write Brady off because he was sacked three times plus tossed a pick-six to Janoris Jenkins.

Week 1 of the NFL is always filled with overreactions, both good and bad, and that goes double for key players like Brady who is considered the G.O.A.T of all quarterbacks. Did NFL fans expect him to complete 75 percent of his passes for 300 yards with three touchdown passes?

There were people who really wanted to see Brady fall from grace but at the age of 43, Brady still showed that he is still a really good quarterback. Is he going to be the best in the league? That is highly unlikely but he will certainly be, at worst, a top-third signal-caller this year.

Don’t Overanalyze Tom Brady’s First Performance

Things that happen in Week 1 will likely be forgotten and that may very well be the case with Brady’s performance in his debut with Tampa Bay, specifically the two interceptions.

Who is to say that he won’t go forward and have an MVP type season or go in the tank and show his true age of 43 trying to play NFL?

KSL Sports Scott Mitchell – a 12-year NFL veteran – knows a thing or two about playing quarterback in the NFL. His takeaways from Brady’s performance is that it does need some improvement but to not overreact either way and to give it a few games before we really know how good TB12 is with Tampa Bay.

“The interception, that’s a late throw. That’s a throw that a guy who’s played 20 years doesn’t make. He doesn’t feel comfortable with as it’s a confidence and it’s a comfortable thing right now,” Mitchell said. “Tom Brady just has to stand in there and throw it, and if you can’t throw it then he’s in trouble. So he’s got to be on point with every single throw. He was just unsure.”

Brady does not seem to be a player who is going to just fall off a cliff like Matt Schaub or Jake Delhomme who from one year were top-end NFL quarterbacks to being near the bottom of their positions.

“I’m still big on Tom Brady and being with with Tampa Bay. This is not you know, again, just like I said at the very beginning, don’t judge any of this by the first month of the season. This is not a sprint. This is a marathon. So don’t get all excited or don’t get all disappointed about this week’s performance.”

Brady still has the tools to be a really good quarterback, just give him some time to actually play football with his new team and give it a few weeks. Any overreaction after the first week of the year is just that in regards to his play.
