SALT LAKE CITY – Mandy McGlynn figured to be the hero for the Utah Royals, but a late-stoppage time goal for the Washington Spirit ended the match in a 3-3 draw.

The Royals (1-6-2, 5 points) faced the Washington Spirit (5-3-1, 16 points) at Audi Field in Washington, D.C., on Saturday, May 17.

Brecken Mozingo and Cece Kizer scored for Utah. The third goal came on a Washington own goal.

Ashley Hatch, Meg Boade, and Casey Krueger scored goals for the Spirit.

First Half

Utah wasted no time getting on the scoreboard. Nine minutes in, former BYU Cougar Brecken Mozingo found the back of the net with a right-footed shot from the center of the box.

After an attempt by Janni Thomsen was turned away, Mozingo blasted the loose ball past the keeper for her first goal of the year.

Washington responded with back-to-back goals in three minutes, grabbing a 2-1 lead in minute 22.

Another former Cougar, Ashley Hatch, netted the first Spirit goal. Moments later, Meg Boade gave Washington the advantage when she beat Mandy McGlynn in the net.

The Royals battled back, evening the match at two when Cece Kizer scored her first goal for Utah.

The scoring extravaganza continued when Utah regained the lead courtesy of a Washington own-goal.

Both teams were credited with four shots on goal in the first 45.

Second Half

A giveaway on the defensive end gave Washington a chance to tie, but McGlynn came off her mark to make a spectacular save, preserving the lead in the process.

Kizer took a hit early in the half, forcing her to leave the match.

Washington dominated the first 20 minutes, generating several scoring chances and keeping the Royals on their heels.

The lopsided second half continued throughout as Utah struggled to match the Spirit.

Utah’s Ana Tejada was given a yellow card for a foul in the box in the 90th minute. The card set up a penalty kick for Washington in the final seconds of regulation.

Following an extended review, Ashley Hatch stepped up for the PK. Hatch fired a shot at the lower right corner that McGlynn made a diving save on, keeping the Royals in front.

Thirteen minutes of stoppage time gave the Spirit time to bounce back.

In the 112th minute, a spectacular cross allowed Casey Krueger to head the tying goal past a sprawling keeper.

The match ended in a 3-3 draw.
