HERRIMAN — The Utah Royals got back to their defensive roots in Houston.

Utah returns to America First Field sitting third in the NWSL with 42 points after a 1-0 road win over the Houston Dash gave the Royals their first clean sheet in eight matches.

Waiting for them is one of the league’s hottest attacks.

Angel City FC arrives in Sandy unbeaten in four matches after Wednesday night’s 3-1 win over Seattle, a stretch in which it has scored 13 goals. The victory also moved Angel City to 36 points, just one behind the Reign and the final playoff spot.

For Royals head coach Jimmy Coenraets, the circumstances make Sunday something more than another late-season match.

“We’re playing two playoff games the next two weeks, two teams that, one is battling to get themselves into it, one is in it,” Coenraets said. “So I think to us, it’s just making sure that we understand what the context is of a playoff game, how we deal with it, how teams adapt.”

Utah is also trying to create some separation in a congested table. The Royals are tied with San Diego in third place on 42 points, just three points ahead of North Carolina and Portland, as they push to finish in the top four and secure a home playoff match.

Back to the basics

Utah limited Houston to four shots and 0.17 expected goals in Saturday’s win, while Mina Tanaka’s 69th-minute finish provided the difference.

It was the Royals’ first shutout since July and a return to the defensive foundation that helped propel Utah toward the top of the table earlier in the season.

Coenraets said the improvement came in part from defending farther away from Utah’s own goal.

“I think, again, it’s going back to the beginning of the season and what brought success was keeping ourselves in the game, not conceding goals,” Coenraets said. “So I think, again, going back to the basics, making sure we defend well, and I think we did really well.

“I think it’s funny because the biggest adaptation we made was just pressing higher and more aggressive, which allowed us to concede fewer final-third actions from an opposition point of view.”

The clean sheet also came with Mia Justus making her first start since April 26, when she left Utah’s 3-0 win at Seattle with an injury, adding another decision for Coenraets in goal.

“When players get up and players are showing themselves at practice, you’ve got to reward it,” Coenraets said. “I think Mia showed that she’s capable of doing it.

“Again, that brings a discussion for this week: Who’s going to take the role? Who’s going to be the best one at practice? Let’s see what happens this week.”

Coenraets described Angel City as “lethal up front,” pointing to its speed and positional flexibility as the club has become more direct in recent weeks.

The numbers support the warning.

Angel City has scored 40 goals this season, just one fewer than Utah’s 41. Maiara Niehues leads LA with eight goals, followed by Sveindís Jonsdottir with seven and Prisca Chilufya with five.

Utah has plenty of firepower of its own. Tanaka’s winner in Houston was her team-leading 11th goal of the season, while Cloé Lacasse has seven goals and a team-high 10 assists.

Newly acquired forward Jameese Joseph also made her Royals debut in Houston, coming off the bench in the 68th minute and playing a role in the buildup to Tanaka’s winner.

The Royals believe there are opportunities to exploit Angel City at the other end.

“From a buildup, from a goalkeeper perspective, we’ve got to press them because that’s where they give up the most goals this season,” Coenraets said. “So those are things we’ll go after.”

A familiar face returns

Former Royals forward Ally Sentnor returns to America First Field in Angel City colors after scoring Wednesday night against Seattle.

Utah selected Sentnor No. 1 overall in the 2024 NWSL Draft, and she made 34 starts with four goals and five assists during her time with the Royals.

After she requested a move, Utah traded Sentnor to Kansas City in August 2025, but her stay with the Current lasted less than a year. Angel City acquired Sentnor in June and later signed her to a contract extension through 2029.

Sunday will mark her first appearance in Sandy since joining Angel City. She arrives in form, having scored in each of LA’s last two matches with penalty kicks against Denver and Seattle.

Utah won the first meeting between the teams this season at BMO Stadium on May 2, a match Coenraets expects LA to remember when it arrives in Sandy.

“Again, it’s a playoff game,” Coenraets said. “I’m pretty sure after us winning at BMO with a red card for them, they’ll be fixed on trying to win this game, which allows us to go out in front of our crowd and just entertain them.”
