Cavemen Close Out Pioneers for Big Week 1 Victory

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – American Fork needed a play to close out their game vs. Lehi.

Bring on Jaxon Gregory.

The Cavemen work horse scored three touchdowns, including the game-sealing 2-yard score in the fourth quarter as American Fork beat the Pioneers, 27-17.

The final score was Gregory’s third touchdown of the game, having also found the end zone from 8 yards out in the second quarter, and from 25 yards away in the third quarter.

The win gives the Cavemen momentum going into their big week two matchup with Timpview.

As for the rest of the action from 5A, the 5A class was full of great games and big-time performances.

Payson 39, Ben Lomond 0

The Lions started the 2019 season in the win column, blasting the Lions. Payson QB Logan Wride threw touchdown passes of 45 and 15 yards, both to Jarrett Chistensen. Lions RB Cooper Ott added two additional scores.

Bountiful 30, Hillcrest 7

The Braves scored 30 unanswered points before the Huskies scored their only touchdown in the fourth quarter. Bountiful running back Jared Mccann racked up three touchdown runs, while quarterback Boston Malmrose threw one touchdown pass to Peyton Beck.

Cedar City 30, Spanish Fork 27 (OT)

The Reds’ Jack Cook scored on a 36-yard touchdown pass from Jaron Garrett with 2:42 left in the fourth quarter to tie up their contest with the Dons at 24-24. The teams went to overtime, where Cedar City’s defense held Spanish Fork to a field goal. Reds RB Kolbe Meek then found the end zone from 3 yards out to end the game, Meek’s second touchdown of the contest.

Maple Mountain 51, Cedar Valley 35

Defense was nowhere to be found in this 5A game, as the Golden Eagles spoiled the Aviators’ inaugural contest. Maple Mountain quarterback Tyler Nelson threw three touchdown passes and ran for an additional two scores, and the Golden Eagles held off a furious 29-point fourth quarter from Cedar Valley.

Murray 31, Cyprus 28 (OT)

The Pirates came back from a 28-6 halftime deficit to force overtime with 22 unanswered second-half points. Nicolas Cooper was the star for the Spartans, scoring two touchdowns on the ground, adding a third on an 80-yard catch from Jarrett Henriksen. Murray won on a clutch 42-yard field goal from Tyler Murray.

Hunter 27, Bonneville 21

The Wolverines came out on top of this back-and-forth game, scoring 13 points in the fourth quarter to claim the victory. Jordan ‘Tupea scored the game winning touchdown with just over 3 minutes left in the fourth quarter, taking the ball in from 7 yards away.

Provo 46, Logan 7

The Bulldogs announced their arrival to the 2019 season with authority, crushing the Grizzlies from the opening kickoff. Provo quarterback Luke Haslem threw three touchdowns, running for another, and the Bulldogs defense didn’t allow a score. Logan’s sole touchdown came on a 95-yard kick return in the first quarter.

Salem Hills 34, Mountain Crest 7

The Skyhawks’ Jared Elmer caught a touchdown and ran for a second, and Salem Hills’ defense swarmed the Mustangs, only allowing one score. Jordan Ware and Sam Hughes each added a touchdown to guide the Skyhawks to victory.

Mountain View 34, Union 7

The Bruins used a 20-point offensive explosion in the second quarter to propel them to a big road win in Roosevelt. Mountain View quarterback Duce Anderson starred in this one, throwing three touchdowns and rushing for two more.

Northridge 27, Viewmont 20

After falling behind 20-13 at halftime, the Knights’ Diesel Freeman returned the second-half kickoff 99 yards for a touchdown. On their next possession, Northridge’s Colby Browning scored his second touchdown of the game, giving them a lead they wouldn’t give up.

Olympus 56, Mountain Ridge 0

The Titans’ Scotty Edwards put on a show, netting five touchdowns, one interception, and one sack in the first half alone. Olympus also scored on runs from Christian Peterson, Chase Hopkins and Eric Pederson. The Titans lead 49-0 at halftime and didn’t look back, blanking the first-year Sentinels.

Farmington quarterback Wyatt Evertsen threw four touchdown passes, and the Phoenix rattled off 34 unanswered points after the first quarter to steamroll the Timberwolves.

Park City 35, Wasatch 30

Miners’ quarterback Jack Skidmore threw three touchdown passes and ran for another 13-yard score as Park City slid by the Wasps. The Miners defense came up big with a 48 yard fumble return for a touchdown in the second quarter from Andrew Pederson.
