Former BYU TE Fotu Katoa Named Head Football Coach At Layton High

LAYTON, Utah – After one year as a head coach at Layton Christian Academy, Fotu Katoa is moving crosstown to take the same position at 6A’s Layton High School beginning this fall.

Katoa, a former BYU tight end who played with the Cougars when Ty Detmer was the quarterback (1988-1990), inherits a Lancers program that has won only five games the past two years. Last year, Katoa led Layton Christian Academy to a 2-7 record in their first year as a 2A program.

The Katoa family has become synonymous with Layton High School as Fotu’s children were prominent athletes at the school. His son Tayler played quarterback and linebacker for the Lancers. He’s now preparing for his sophomore season with the USC Trojans at the inside linebacker spot after serving a two-year mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Eliza Katoa played volleyball and beach volleyball for the University of Utah from 2014-17 and was an MVP while at Layton in 2013.

Fotu Katoa’s nephew is BYU junior running back Lopini Katoa who is competing to be the starting running back in the Cougar backfield this fall.

High School football practices across the state of Utah are tentatively scheduled to begin on July 27th with the first week of the season set for August 15th.
