SALT LAKE CITY – West Panthers star quarterback Kamden Lopati is reportedly headed to the University of Michigan as the first major QB commitment for new head coach Kyle Whittingham.

Multiple outlets reported Lopati will wear maize and blue after decommitting from Illinois on Monday, April 13.

ESPN has Lopati rated as the 50th-best prospect in the nation as he prepares for his senior season at West. Rivals lists him as the No. 9 QB in its 2027 Industry Rankings.

Who is Kamden Lopati?

Already standing 6’3″ and weighing 225 pounds, Lopati has the requisite size required to withstand the pounding a Power Four QB will receive.

He has thrown for 5,721 yards and 59 touchdowns since earning the starting job as a sophomore. Lopati adds 13 rushing TDs and 1,377 yards on the ground, showcasing an ability to take advantage of anything the defense gives him.

With Loptai under center, the Panthers went 11-2 and earned the No. 1 seed in the state playoffs before falling in the semifinals to Orem.

The scouting report from Andrew Ivins with 247Sports glows with praise for the dual-threat QB.

-Savvy dual-threat quarterback that excels as a vertical passer and a power runner in a spread attack.
-Built almost like a linebacker and measured just under 6-foot-3, 225 pounds in advance of senior year.
-Can get the ball out fast with a smooth 3/4 release.
-Likes to use touch when looking deep.
-Will hit his first read and keep an offense on schedule, but tends to make some of his best tosses when working off-script as he constantly extends plays with his short-area quickness and pocket awareness.
-Dangerous on the scramble and is the type of number that defenses have to account for in the RPO game with his vision and creativity.
-Projects as a potential Power Four starter that can thrive in a system that wants to capitalize on his mobility.
