Lone Peak Comeback Bid Falls Short, Lose 28-21 To Bishop Gorman

Sep 14, 2019, 10:27 PM

HIGHLAND, Utah – It’s not everyday a national powerhouse travels to Utah County to play a football game. No, not USC’s game against BYU, the Bishop Gorman Gaels made the trip to Highland to face Lone Peak. The Gaels trip was worth it, getting a 28-21 win against the defending 6A Utah State Champions.

But it didn’t come easy.

Bishop Gorman jumped out to an early 21-0 lead in the first half thanks to a strong passing attack between quarterback Micah Bowers and wide receiver Rome Odunze. The two connected for two touchdowns, including a 93-yard completion that gave the Gaels their early 21-0 lead.

Lone Peak eventually settled down and started attacking the Gaels through the air. Trajan Hansen reeled in back-to-back highlight reel catches to lead the Knights into the end zone.

They’d head to the locker room trailing 21-7.

Second Half Comeback Bid

In the second half, the offense continued to roll. Lone Peak closed out the third quarter with a long touchdown drive and found the end zone on the first play of the fourth quarter bringing the score to 21-14.

The defense stepped up too.

On the next drive for the Gaels, safety Nate Ritchie would intercept a pass deep in Bishop Gorman territory and Lone Peak capitalized. Backup quarterback Luke Romney found Eli Cloward in the flat, and Cloward beat the defense around the end to tie the game at 21 points each.

After surrendering 21 unanswered points, Bishop Gorman got the ball back with nine minutes left and executed a 16 play scoring drive capped off by a second Bowers-Odunze touchdown connection – the final score of the game.

Lone Peak falls to 4-1 with the loss and will turn its attention to region play. The Knights open Region 4 next Friday against Westlake High School.
