Six High School Teams Return Home As State Champions

TAYLORSVILLE, Utah – Six high school basketball teams return home from Salt Lake Community College as champions. Saturday marked state championship games for four classifications in girls’ basketball (6A, 5A, 3A, 2A) and two classifications in boys’ basketball (3A, 2A).

6A Girls Championship – Bingham vs Copper Hills

Bingham senior Maggie McCord peaked at the right time, the Bingham senior scored a season high 25 points to lead the Miners to a 46-41 win over heavy favorite Copper Hills. After jumping out to an 11-3 lead in the first quarter, the Miners led for the rest of the game en route to their first state championship since 2007.

5A Girls Championship – East vs Corner Canyon

A marquee game featuring future Ute Kemery Martin and the Leopard’s Big Three of Margarita Satini, Lealani Falatea, and Deserae Falatea, East came out on top to win its second-straight state championship. East’s trio combined for 54 points in the win while Jaeden Vaifanua and Martin carried Corner Canyon scoring 32 and 23 points respectively, in the loss.

3A Boys Championship – Morgan vs Richfield

Through three quarters, the Trojan and Wildcats were in a defensive struggle with Morgan leading 38-32 before both teams combined for 47 points in the fourth quarter. The Trojans ultimately came out on top in a hostile Sevier Valley Center (located in Richfield) led by Trey Miles’ 24 point outing.

3A Girls Championship – Grantsville vs Emery

Emery rolled Grantsville in the 3A championship completing a perfect 24-0 season. Megan Jensen led the Spartans with 26 points and Kinlee Toomer and Kacelyn Toomer combined for 24 points in the win.

2A Boys Championship – Layton Christian vs Parowan

After leading 15-13 at the half, Layton Christian outscored Parowan 28-23 in the second half for a 43-36 win in the 2A championship. Sam Muller led the Eagles in the win with 18 points while Porter Wood scored 16 points in the loss.

2A Girls Championship – Kanab vs Beaver

It came down to the final seconds, but the Beaver Beavers go home champions after Brittlyn Carter came up with a steal to seal the 54-52 victory in the 2A championship. Sydnee Gillins led the Beavers with 24 points in the win while Carter added 17.
