BYU’s Remaining Targets For 2020 Class Leading Up To National Signing Day

PROVO, Utah – The Christmas feeling that used to come for College Football fans on the first Wednesday of February is now gone for the most part. National Signing Day is still an important day on the college football calendar, but it doesn’t carry the same weight it once did because of the Early Signing Period in December.

Eighty-three percent of the rated prospects in the 247Sports database signed with schools they were committed to during the 72-hour signing period last month. But that doesn’t mean there aren’t quality players out there that have yet to sign.

BYU is in the mix for a number of prospects along with many preferred walk-ons who the Cougars have been able to find gems from in recent years.

BYU head coach Kalani Sitake began announcing his program’s 2020 recruiting class on Wednesday on the first day of the early signing period for college football.

Here are the top prospects that BYU is still in the mix as the traditional Signing Day approaches next week.

Tate Romney, LB, Chandler, Arizona

Like his older brothers Baylor and Gunner, Tate is a quiet kid that has kept his recruitment close to the vest. He took an unofficial to BYU earlier this month to get another look at Provo and what the Cougars have to offer. It’s anyone’s guess where Romney could end up. The appeal of playing with both of your older brothers is a unique one, but many programs within Power 5 programs are hoping to land Romney’s letter of intent.

Bodie Schoonover, LB, American Fork High School

Schoonover de-committed from BYU last month in Kalani Sitake’s office. The Cougars are not ruled out though for Schoonover who missed last season at American Fork due to an injury. Schoonover’s recruitment is down to BYU and UCLA. The strength and conditioning program at UCLA led by former BYU strength coach Frank Wintrich has left an impression on Schoonover and his family. This recruitment could go either way on Signing Day.

Kyle Vassau, LB, Carlsbad, California

Vassau committed to the Cougars Monday, January 27, before National Signing Day.

Alex Lines, TE, Gilbert, Arizona

Lines had an official visit to BYU last month and has held off on the decision to sign with a school. He holds offers from a few Power 5 programs but BYU and Boise State are the two programs that have risen up to Lines’ wish list.

Jake Griffin, OT, Mesa, Arizona

Griffin committed to the Cougars Monday, January 27, before National Signing Day.

Scotty Edwards, Athlete, Salt Lake City

One of the benefits to the early signing period is that it does allow some recruit who don’t sign in the early period to receive a lot more attention leading up to the traditional period in February. Scotty Edwards out of Olympus High is one of those recruits who has seen his recruitment blow up out on the west coast, but it’s zeroing in BYU and Stanford. Edwards took an official visit to The Farm last weekend and will be headed to BYU this weekend. Edwards could play a variety of positions at the collegiate level on both offense and defense, but projects to be a safety if he were to sign with BYU.
