SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – Former Utah cornerback Ryan Lacy said that Utes defensive coordinator Morgan Scalley’s denial of an allegation made by Lacy “was a flat slap in my face.”

Lacy joined KSL Sports Utah Utes insider and host of the Crimson Corner podcast Trevor Allen on a recent episode to discuss the results of the investigation into Scalley and a racial slur that the coach used in a 2013 text message.

In addition to the text message, Lacy said that he was the victim of a racial slur used by Scalley during the cornerback’s freshman season.

A third-party reviewed the allegations against Scalley and after the results were presented to the University of Utah, the defensive coordinator was reinstated from an indefinite suspension.

Since the reinstatement of Scalley, Lacy has received threats as well as his family. The University of Utah tweeted a statement on Thursday, July 1.

“Threats made to alum Ryan Lacy are repugnant,” the university wrote. “Such actions are not tolerated by the University. While we know the vast majority of the U of U community treats each other with respect and dignity, there are some outliers who do not share that spirit. We condemn their racist words and actions in the strongest way possible.”

The results of the investigation into any potential wrongdoings by Scalley showed that he denied Lacy’s allegation in conversations with investigators.

Allen asked Lacy what his initial reaction was to Scalley’s denial.

“I was upset and I felt like it was just a slap in my face to the truth, you know, and I have nothing to gain by speaking my truth,” Lacy responded. “I had nothing to gain from speaking my truth and being denied. I just felt like it was a flat slap in my face like, and just to me, it’s like, if that happens, he can do it again. And all he has to do is deny it and then it’s gonna be swept under the rug, but I had no reason to get on the social media platform to lie to anybody. And I was upset you know because I wear all my Utah gear with pride. I wear my rings with honor and I support the university. And you know, and I just felt I felt it was a slap in my face not only to me but to any other minority that steps on that campus and has to play under him.”

Later in the podcast, Allen asked Lacy if he’d spoken to Scalley. Lacy said that he hadn’t spoken to Scalley since confronting him about the incident between the two of them while still as a member of the Utah football team. The former Utes cornerback said that’d he’d love to talk to Scalley and have “an intelligent conversation, a grown man-to-man conversation.”

“Of course, of course, I would love to have that conversation with him,” Lacy said. “I know he’s going through a lot, you know, the universe is going through a lot. But one of the main things is, you know, from the very beginning, I would love to have that discussion. And you know, I’ve notified the university about wanting to have a discussion with them. And that’s something that I would definitely be open to.”
