Former Utah Softball Star Anissa Urtez Hits First Home Run In Olympic History For Team Mexico

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – Former University of Utah softball standout Anissa Urtez made history when she hit the first home run by Team Mexico in Olympic history.

Urtez hit a home run during Mexico’s game against Japan on Thursday, July 22.
During the fifth inning off action, Urtez sent Japanese legend Yukiko Ueno’s pitch over the fence for a home run.
It was the first home run in the Olympic Games by a player from the Mexican National Team.

Unfortunately for Urtez and Mexico, Japan rallied in extra innings and won to improve to 2-0. The loss moved Mexico to 0-2 in Tokyo.

During her career with the Utes, Urtez had a batting average of .358. She recorded 106 runs and nine home runs in 481 at-bats over 165 with Utah.
Urtez and Mexico’s next contest will be against Team USA (2-0). The former Utah player’s fiancée, Amanda Chidester, plays for the United States.
