SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – Kyle Van Noy, Super Bowl Champion and BYU alumni, is in “awww” that his Cougars continue to beat themselves against rival Utah.

Following BYU’s 20-13 loss at home, Van Noy took to Twitter to express his frustrations about the multiple turnovers that were the nail in BYU’s coffin.

“No way I pick my phone up and see we (gave) Utah another touchdown to the defense … 9 straight years has to be a record I’m in awww again of how we continue to beat ourselves!!” Van Noy tweeted.

Nine straight ties a record, one both teams have held at some point. From 1929 to 1937 Utah went on a 9-0 streak and between 1979 and 1987 BYU boasted the same record.

Van Noy’s frustration with the turnovers is legitimate. The Utes have had nine interceptions returned for touchdowns against the Cougars since 2019 while the Cougars’ last pick 6 came in 1987.

Another former Cougar, Tanner Mangum, attempted to help his team out by tweeting of the lessons he learned from his four losses to Utah before the game. Some of the lessons included turnovers, big plays and playing until the finish.

Those takeaways are what killed the Cougars last night, especially the turnovers. Mangum pointed that out in a later tweet.

On the other side, former Utes also took to Twitter showing support and excitement for the big win.

Dominique Hatfield who now plays for the LA Rams thinks it might be time for Utah to find a new rival. Along those same lines, Eric Weddle, also an LA ram, is “not sure if it is a rivalry anymore.”

Former Utah punter Tom Hackett took notice of the talent gap between his Utes and the Cougars, specifically during the second half.

In the coming weeks, Utah will take on Northern Illinois and Idaho State before the real challenge begins and they start Pac-12 play.

BYU has a tough road ahead. Next, they travel to Tennessee and then they take on USC at home.
