NBA Western Conference Week Two Power Rankings: Warriors Have Record Setting Week

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – The Golden State Warriors had a fantastic week of basketball in the second week of the NBA season. One of the games was a record setting night for Klay Thompson.

The Utah Jazz found their rhythm and was rolling on the road, going undefeated. They jumped up six spots in the Power Rankings.

Here is the KSL Sports Western Conference Power Rankings from the second week of the NBA season. Games played from October 24 to October 30.

1. Golden State Warriors (7-1)

Week two record: 4-0

Wins: vs. Washington, at New York, at Brooklyn, at Chicago

Three of the four games for the Warriors saw one player scoring over 40 points. Two of those games had players scoring over 50 points. It started in Washington as Stephen Curry dropped 51 points, including 11 three pointers. Kevin Durant scored 41 points against the New York Knicks. Klay Thompson had 52 points against the Chicago Bulls and set a new NBA record 14 three pointers made. A record previously held by his backcourt mate Stephen Curry.

2. Denver Nuggets (5-1)

Week two record: 1-1

Wins: vs. New Orleans

Losses: at LA Lakers

After a 4-0 start, the Nuggets suffered their first loss of the season to the Los Angeles Lakers. They lost by seven points. Nikola Jokic played well in the loss to the Lakers as he scored 24 points and snatched 11 rebounds. He struggled against the Pelicans but nearly had a triple-double, finishing with 12 points, 9 rebounds and 10 assists.

3. Portland Trail Blazers (5-2)

Week two record: 3-1

Wins: at Orlando, at Indiana, at Houston

Losses: at Miami

Damian Lillard dropped back-to-back 40 point games, starting with 41 in Orlando and 42 in Miami. The Blazers finished 3-1 on their road trip during week two.

4. Utah Jazz (4-2)

Week two record: 3-0

Wins: at Houston, at New Orleans, at Dallas

After a 1-2 start, the Jazz bounced back and won three straight on the road. Oddly enough, Utah is 4-0 on the road and 0-2 at home. Donovan Mitchell got out of his slump by starting the four game road trip with a 38 point performance in Houston. Rudy Gobert has a double-double in every game this season. He averaged 20 points, 14.3 rebounds and 3.3 blocks per game during week two of the season.

5. San Antonio Spurs (4-2)

Week two record: 2-1

Wins: vs. LA Lakers, vs. Dallas (in overtime)

Losses: vs. Indiana

DeMar DeRozan averaged 27.3 points per game as he continues to be a weapon for the Spurs. LaMarcus Aldridge added 16.6 points per game to help DeRozan carry the Spurs to a 4-2 record. The two wins for the Spurs were by 9 points combined but they lost to the Pacers by 20 at home.

6. New Orleans Pelicans (4-2)

Week two record: 1-2

Wins: vs. Brooklyn

Losses: vs. Utah, at Denver

Anthony Davis is the heart of the Pelicans. He played in their first game of week two, which New Orleans beat Brooklyn. He missed games against Utah and Denver and the Pelicans both of those games. In Davis’ absence, Nikola Mirotic led the team with 25 points against the Jazz and Julius Randle had 24 to lead New Orleans in scoring in the loss to the Nuggets.

7. Memphis Grizzlies (4-2)

Week two record: 2-1

Wins: vs. Phoenix, vs. Washington

Losses: at Sacramento

The Grizzlies are turning some heads with the unexpected 4-2 start to the season. All three games during week two had a different leading scorer. Mike Conley scored 27 against Sacramento, Marc Gasol had 19 in the win over Phoenix and Garrett Temple led the team with 20 points against Washington. They are winning their games on the defensive end, holding their opponents to under 100 points in all three games during week two.

8. Sacramento Kings (5-3)

Week two record: 4-0

Wins: vs. Memphis, vs. Washington, at Miami, at Orlando

Not a lot of people expected the Kings to have a winning record this season. They had an impressive 4-0 week with two wins on the road. Buddy Hield scored 23 points against Memphis and 25 in Orlando. He averaged 23.2 points per game in the four game stretch.

9. Los Angeles Clippers (4-3)

Week two record: 2-1

Wins: at Houston, vs. Washington

Losses: at Oklahoma City

Montrezl Harrell started the second week with a career high against his old team, scoring 30 points against Houston. Tobias Harris led the team in scoring against Washington with 22 points and Danilo Gallinari had 27 points in Oklahoma City. All three games were not close, the two wins were by a combined 52 points and they lost by 18 against the Thunder.

10. Minnesota Timberwolves (3-4)

Week two record: 1-2

Wins: vs. LA Lakers

Losses: at Toronto, vs. Milwaukee

Jimmy Butler had to fantastic performances with 23 points in Toronto and 32 against the Lakers. He only scored 4 points on 2-of-11 shooting in the loss to Milwaukee. Karl Anthony-Towns averaged 18.3 points and 10.3 rebounds in the three games. Andrew Wiggins missed all three contests due to injury.

11. Oklahoma City Thunder (2-4)

Week two record: 2-1

Wins: vs. Phoenix, vs. LA Clippers

Losses: vs. Boston

After a 0-4 start, the Thunder racked up two wins in week two. Russell Westbrook averaged 22.6 points, 9.3 rebounds and 7.6 assists during the second week of the season. Paul George put up an average of 25.6 points and 8 rebounds per game.

12. Los Angeles Lakers (2-5)

Week two record: 2-2

Wins: at Phoenix, vs. Denver

Losses: at San Antonio, at Minnesota

LeBron James finally collected his first two wins in a Lakers uniform. He had a triple-double in their win over the Denver Nuggets. James finished week two with an average of 27.7 points, 9.7 rebounds and 8.2 assists per game.

13. Dallas Mavericks (2-5)

Week two record: 0-4

Losses: at Atlanta, at Toronto, vs. Utah, at San Antonio (in overtime)

The Mavericks had a good season after the first week with a 2-1 record. They have dropped their last four games. Rookie guard Luka Doncic had his first 30 point game against the San Antonio Spurs with 31 points. He finished week two averaging 22 points per game.

14. Houston Rockets (1-5)

Week two record: 0-3

Losses: vs. Utah, vs. LA Clippers, vs. Portland

The Rockets are hovering over the panic button right now as they sit at 1-5. The reason why they haven’t hit the button yet is because they were without Chris Paul against the Jazz as he finish his two-game suspension and James Harden injured his hamstring against the Jazz and didn’t play in the rest of the week two games.

15. Phoenix Suns (1-5)

Week two record: 0-3

Losses: vs. LA Lakers, at Memphis, at Oklahoma City

After starting 1-0, the Suns have lost their last five games. Rookie big man Deandre Ayton had his best game of his young career against the Memphis Grizzlies with 24 points. Devin Booker didn’t play in the games against Memphis and Oklahoma City with a hamstring injury.
