Cam Rising, Jaren Hall, Logan Bonner Make Davey O’Brien Watchlist

SALT LAKE CITY- After all three state of Utah quarterbacks made the Maxwell Award Watchlist on July 18, Utah’s Cam Rising, BYU’s Jaren Hall, and Utah State’s Logan Bonner made the Davey O’Brien Award watchlist. The Davey O’Brien Watchlist features 35 of the best college quarterbacks and is presented to the most elite of the bunch at the end of the year. It is also the oldest (1981) and most prestigious award a college quarterback can earn.

The official Davey O’Brien Quarterback Class of 2022 will be announced on October 25 with fan voting on social media playing a part in naming semifinalists. November 8 the class will be narrowed down to 16 and by November 21 the pool will be down to three. The award will officially be given on December 8 at The Home Depot College Football Awards on ESPN.

Utah’s Cam Rising became a big player for the Utes in 2021 after taking over for original starter Charlie Brewer at the beginning of the season. Brewer struggled to get much going for the Utes in their first three games, going 1-2. Rising took over in the middle of the San Diego State game, and while the result was still a loss, he did will the team to triple overtime.

After fully taking over as the starter for Utah, Rising went 9-2 leading the Utes to their first ever Pac-12 Championship and Rose Bowl appearance. Rising finished the 2021 season with 20 touchdowns, five interceptions, 2,493 total passing yards, a QBR of 84.2 while being named a semifinalist for the award.
Davey O’Brien Candidate Jaren Hall
Jaren Hall had a breakout season for BYU as a sophomore in 2021. Coming off the heels of first round NFL pick Zach Wilson, Hall put together eight wins for the Cougars in 10 starts while unfortunately missing three games due to injury. However, missing a few games didn’t stop Hall from being great in 2021.

Hall ended last year as the Pro Football Network All-Independent Quarterback of the Year and earned Phil Steele All-Independent First Team. and Pro Football Network All-Independent First Team honors. He also made the Davey O’Brien Award’s Great 8 list for his performance in week two against the Utes. Hall finished the year with 20 touchdown passes, five interceptions, 2,583 passing yards and a QBR of 78.0.
Davey O’Brien Candidate Logan Bonner
Logan Bonner was fantastic for USU in 2021 setting five single-season school records for the Aggies while leading them to their first ever Mountain West Conference title. For his efforts, Bonner was named the offensive MVP of the MWC Championship game and is getting early preseason second-team all-Mountain West nods from both Athlon Sports and Phil Steele.

Bonner ended his 2021 campaign with 36 touchdown passes, 12 interceptions, 3,628 passing yards and a QBR of 63.7. Bonner’s 36 touchdown passes are tied for fourth most in a single season in Mountain West history and seventh-most in school history for a career.
