San Diego’s Late Field Goal Sinks Salt Lake Stallions

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – In a back-and-forth affair, the Salt Lake Stallions had their hearts broken as the San Diego Fleet made a field goal as time expired to pick up the 27-25 win.

Salt Lake quarterback Josh Woodrum struggled with 380 yards, 1 touchdown and 3 interceptions.

Running back Joel Bouagnon ran the ball 11 times for 36 yards and 1 touchdown, while wide receiver De’Mornay Pierson-El collected 8 catches for 130 yards.

For San Diego, quarterback Mike Bercovici threw for 304 yards, 1 touchdown and 1 interception. Wide receiver Dontez Ford had 3 receptions for 94 yards.

Salt Lake Takes Lead Off Of Defense

San Diego scored first when they made a 39-yard field goal to take a 3-0 lead with 4:56 left in the first quarter.

Salt Lake took the lead with 27 seconds left when running back Joel Bouagnon ran in a touchdown from three yards out. Woodrum completed the two point conversion with a run, giving the Stallions an 8-3 lead.

Early in the second quarter, the Fleet trimmed the lead to two points with a 34-yard field goal.

Woodrum threw an interception in the final minute of the first half, but the Stallions had an 8-6 lead at the half.

Third Quarter Turnovers For Stallions

Salt Lake extended the lead to 11-6 with 8:19 left in the third when Taylor Bertolet nailed a 44-yard field goal.

The Stallions had the ball with 3:20 left when running back Terrell Newby fumbled the ball, which was recovered by the Fleet and returned for a 41-yard touchdown. San Diego couldn’t pick up the two-point conversion, but had a 12-11 lead. The Stallions committed their third turnover of the game.

On the next play for the Stallions, Woodrum received a hard hit and was forced out of the game. Former Arkansas quarterback Austin Allen took over for Woodrum.

With 2:33 left, Allen was sacked and fumbled the ball, which was recovered by San Diego. On the next play, Bercovici connected with tight end Ben Johnson on an 18-yard touchdown pass. The Fleet had an 18-11 lead late in the third quarter.

Early in the fourth quarter, Woodrum returned to the game and threw his third interception which was returned 22-yards for a touchdown. San Diego defensive back Kameron Kelly intercepted all three passes.

With four minutes left in the game, Bouagnon scored a four-yard touchdown – his second of the game, to trim the Stallions deficit to seven.

Salt Lake had the ball with 51 seconds left, when Woodrum found tight end Nick Truesdell for a 6-yard touchdown pass. He then connected with wide receiver Kenny Bell on the two-point conversion to put the Stallions ahead 27-25.

The Fleet were able to get in field goal range when Donny Hageman nailed a 44-yard field goal as time expired to give San Diego the win.

Up Next

The Stallions dropped to 1-4 on the season. They will host the Memphis Express on Saturday at 2 p.m.
