PROVO, Utah – BYU senior wide receiver Talon Shumway has been one of the leading receivers for the Cougars this season.

Shumway, a former Lone Peak High dual-sport athlete, committed to BYU over seven years ago has enjoyed his time with the Cougars, especially this season.

“It’s been my favorite season. Ups and downs, yeah. But I think all in all, it’s definitely been my favorite season (here at BYU),” said Shumway on the Cougar Tracks Podcast.

Through eight games this year, Shumway has hauled in 21 receptions for 296 receiving yards and one touchdown. Within those 21 receptions, Shumway has made difficult catches in BYU’s wins against the likes of USC and Utah State.

“The experiences, the overall feel and just the fact that I’m done (with football) soon. So I feel like I’m playing for more,” said Shumway on why this season has been his favorite.

Shumway has maintained a positive attitude throughout his BYU career despite all the changes at quarterback. In the four seasons Shumway has appeared in games, he has had eight different quarterbacks throwing him passes. That can be a tough thing for a wide receiver who needs the chemistry with the top signal-caller. But Shumway has been impressed with this group of quarterbacks this season.

“It’s great. Every week is still good. I don’t think there’s been any weeks where we’ve been disappointed with who we’re playing with (at quarterback),” said Shumway. “I’ve played with eight quarterbacks in my career in games, so it’s nothing new. Sometimes it’s fun but we play with these guys everyday anyway and they can all play.”

Head coach Kalani Sitake has stated in the past that he wants football players who are “ballers” both on and off the field. Shumway is definitely that. Along with his success as a starter at wide receiver, Shumway has one of the highest GPA’s on the team and was a semifinalist for Campbell Trophy which is given to the best scholar-athlete in College Football.

The focus now for Shumway is simply to get a win against Liberty and keep things rolling for this offense.

“You have to take it one week at a time. What happened in the past has no bearing on what’s going this week. We know the things that we (as an offense) can do so now it’s just about doing those things this week and getting ready for Saturday’s game,” said Shumway.
