WEST VALLEY CITY, Utah – Team Fredette went into Friday night looking to spring the upset against No. 2-seed Challenge ALS and they had to do it without coach, yes coach, Jimmer Fredette.

Jimmer traveled back to Denver earlier on Friday to be with his family.  Fredette had said on Thursday to the media that it was his personal decision to not play in The Basketball Tournament this year.

Team Fredette would have loved to have the services of Jimmer Fredette on the court because Challenge ALS posed a ton of challenges for Team Fredette’s roster early in the game.

Team Fredette fought back though led by their seasoned vets Jeff Ledbetter and Jordon Crawford put together a quick five-point stretch to tie the game up at 66 in the fourth quarter.

Then down 68-66, Challenge ALS responded with a quick 7-0 run to regain the lead minutes before the Elam Ending.

Elam Ending

With Team Fredette down 74-71, Jordon Crawford went to the foul line for a pair of three throws with 3:59 remaining on the clock before the Elam Ending went into effect. Crawford made of one of the two free throws to put the score at 74-72 and the target score of 82 was what the teams needed to reach.

Tu Holloway drove to the basket for a layup and was fouled the ball was then blocked by ALS as while the shot was going down. Ruled goaltending and then Holloway went to the line for a free throw and he made that shot from the charity stripe.

The game closed with controversy as Team Fredette’s Jeff Ledbetter was called for a foul on the shooter Marvelle Harris from ALS sending him to the line with a chance to win the game.  Harris made the first free throw then Team Fredette head coach Dave Rose called a timeout. Harris missed the second three throw keeping Team Fredette’s chances alive.

Jeff Ledbetter then turned the ball over on the other end on a possession where Team Fredette could have won the game but the costly turnover gave ALS another chance at the win.

ALS’ DeShawn Stephens hit the game-winner on a layup to give ALS the win and send the host team out in the second round with a final score of 83-80.

Tyler Haws: DNP

Former BYU basketball star Tyler Haws did not play in Friday night’s loss against ALS.  In two games, Haws played five minutes and didn’t touch the ball in those five minutes of play.

Salt Lake Regional Championship

On Saturday Challenge ALS will take on Eberlein Drive for the Salt Lake Regional Championship and a chance to advance to the Quarterfinals of The Basketball Tournament at 7 p.m. at The Maverik Center.
