Three Takeaways From Utah’s Win Over Ohio

CONWAY, S.C. – After a disappointing performance on Thursday night against Coastal Carolina, the Utah Utes bounced back with a nice performance leading to an 80-66 win over Ohio in the Myrtle Beach Invitational.

Four Utes scored in double figures, led by Timmy Allen with 19 points, Both Gach added 18 points, Rylan Jones chipped in 17 points and Riley Battin posted 10 points.

Great Bounce Back Performance From Both Gach

Before the Myrtle Beach Invitational, Gach was averaging 17.7 points per game. Against Coastal Carolina on Thursday night, Gach had just five points on 2-of-11 shooting and 0-for-5 from downtown.

He rebounded from that performance with 18 points and 3 assists. The sophomore shot 6-of-10 from the field and made one three pointer in three attempts in 31 minutes on the court. Gach was able to get to the free-throw line more often against Ohio and made all five attempts at the charity stripe.

Living At The Foul Line

Against Coastal Carolina, the Utes shot 56 percent from the foul line, making 14 of their 25 attempts. They mightily improved at the free throw line against Ohio, nearly making all of their attempts. Utah shot 27-of-28 from the free throw line.

Allen made all nine of his attempts, Jones went 6-of-6, Gach made all five shots and Mikael Jantunen was a perfect 4-for-4. The only player to miss a free throw was Battin, who went 3-of-4.

Rylan Jones With Best Performance Thus Far

A triple double as a freshmen is about as good of a performance that you can have in basketball. Rylan Jones had a triple double in their 94-point win over Mississippi Valley State. Jones recorded a career-high 17 points along with 4 assists and 3 rebounds. He shot 4-of-9 from the field and 3-for-5 from beyond the arc.

The freshman has had an impressive start to his college career and has taken the starting point guard role as a true freshman and has ran with it.

Utah improved to 4-1 on the season and will play their final game of the Myrtle Beach Invitational against Tulane on Sunday. The game will begin at 8:30 a.m. and will be broadcast on ESPNU.
