Two First-Time Utah Olympians Miss Out On Medals In Their Events

TOKYO — Two first-time Olympians from Utah competed Tuesday in Tokyo, but unfortunately, did not earn medals in their events.

Haley Batten – Cycling
Park City’s Haley Batten made her Olympic debut overnight in the women’s mountain bike race.
She was listed as someone who might be able to medal if everything went perfect.
The BMX Cross Country Mountain Bike Course is one of the venues furthest away from downtown Tokyo. It takes about three hours to get there.
Because of the less dense population in that part of Japan, fans were actually allowed to attend the event, which is not the norm for the Tokyo Olympic Games.
Batten was one of three Americans in the race, and was the first American to cross the finish line.
She came in 9th place, only three minutes behind the Bronze Medal winner, but a great showing for a young mountain biker who we will probably see again in future Olympics.

Alexis Lagan – Shooting
Alexis Lagan, our sharpshooter from the University of Utah, competed in the mixed team 10-meter pistol event with Nickolaus Mowrer from Montana.
They came in 16th place in a qualification round and missed out going to the finals, but Lagan will compete again Thursday in the 25-meter rifle event.
