Life In The Transfer Portal An Unnerving Experience For Most

May 11, 2021, 2:53 PM

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – Former Utah punter Ben Lennon decided his career was best suited at another school which led him to enter his name into the transfer portal and embark on a journey into the unknown.

For college athletes who feel the need to join another team, regardless of the reason, the decision to enter the transfer portal is a nerve-wracking one. The disappointment from the coaching staff at your “current” school is frightening, then the uncertainty surrounding whether or not another school would be willing to offer you a scholarship is equally scary.

But, for players like Lennon, the uncertainty and unknown are worth the risk.

The transfer portal experience varies for every athlete. Some athletes receive a number of inquiries while others may never hear from a coach again. But every payer must fill paperwork that compliance provides to first enter their name into the portal.

Then, once the paperwork is submitted and approved, the athlete’s name appears in the portal for the rest of the country to view. During this time, the athlete will likely receive friend requests via social media from other coaches around the country. But often, this tease is just a way for college coaches to show slight interest. It rarely leads to anything more serious.

Athletes helplessly wait for their phone to ring. Fortunately, for Lennon, he received a call from Bethune-Cookman in Daytona Beach, Florida. His destination had called.

Lennon will pack everything he has up. Throw it into the back of his car, and drive across America alongside his fiance and dog.

Life will forever be different for Lennon. But hopefully for his sake, the stress, anxiety and angst he felt while at Utah can deteriorate as he enjoyed the majestic sights and sounds of the Atlantic Ocean.
