OGDEN, Utah – When Weber State takes the field on Saturday at Idaho State, it will have been 434 days since their last football game during the 2019 season.

Weber State along with other schools in the Big Sky, including Idaho State, had their 2020 fall season postponed to the spring of 2021. The Wildcats will begin their six-game conference-only schedule on the road against the Bengals in Pocatello on Saturday.

Jay Hill’s team has the talent to make a deep run in the FCS Playoffs and are considered National Title contenders.

Who Will Be The Quarterback For Weber State Against Idaho State?

The Wildcats have their quarterback battle down to two players heading into the season opener. On their first depth chart that was released earlier in the week, the quarterback position had an OR between Randall Johnson and Bronson Barron.

Johnson is a Los Angeles, California native is a transfer from Middle Tennessee State. He is more of a dual-threat type of quarterback that can get some yards on the ground with his legs.

Barron is a true freshman from American Fork High School. He is more of a pocket passer at the quarterback position. The American Fork, Utah native is back at Weber State after spending the last two years serving a two-year church mission.

Weber State Players To Watch For In Season Opener Against Idaho State

Offensively, Weber State is very talented on the offensive line. Which that talent will open up gaps to allow two-time All-American Josh Davis, along with Dontae McMillan and company to rack up yards in the run game.

Whichever quarterback gets the start on Saturday, they will have weapons on the outside with All-Big Sky performer Rashid Shaheed, along with David Ames, Ty MacPherson and Devon Cooley.

Defensively, Jared Schiess is the anchor of the defensive line. George Tarlas, Sione Lapuaho and Jordan Lutui join him on the stout defensive front. At linebacker, Noah Vaea and Conner Mortensen hold down that position group. In the secondary, Preson Smith or Ja’Kobe Smith, along with Desmond Williams are the safeties. Eddie Heckard and Marque Collins are the starting cornerbacks.

The Wildcats and Bengals will kickoff at 4 p.m. MST and will be streamed on Pluto TV channel 1061 or heard on 103.1 FM “The Wave.”
