BYU’s AJ Dybantsa Posts First Triple-Double To Close Out Nonconference

PROVO, Utah – BYU basketball star AJ Dybantsa posted his first career triple-double as a college player on Monday.

In BYU’s 109-81 win over Eastern Washington, Dybantsa finished with 33 points, 10 rebounds, and 10 assists.

It’s the first triple-double by a BYU basketball player since Kyle Collinsworth, the NCAA’s career leader in triple-doubles, pulled off his final one as a Cougar against UAB in the NIT in 2016.

AJ Dybantsa: First Triple-Double by a BYU player since 2016

Dybantsa’s triple-double came at the two-minute mark in the second half when he got his 10th assist of the night after Mihailo Boskovic buried a three-pointer.

For the previous four possessions, BYU fans at the Marriott Center were cheering for the team to give Dybantsa the ball, hoping he would get a triple-double.

Dybantsa delivered.

What makes the triple-double even more impressive is the 30 points scored and the efficiency with which Dybantsa played during BYU’s victory over the Eagles.

Dybantsa became the first BYU player ever to post a triple-double and score 30 points.

To add to the impressive nature of Dybantsa’s night, he shot 85% from the field and 81% from the free-throw line.

Dybantsa was unavailable to speak with the media because he had to catch a flight after the game for the Christmas break. However, BYU basketball head coach Kevin Young highlighted how aggressive Dybantsa was as one of his takeaways for how Dybantsa was able to post a triple-double.

Young also pointed to Dybantsa’s presence on the glass with rebounding. The second-year head coach noted that is something they have talked to Dybantsa about doing “more and more” on the floor.

It was the second time in the last three games that Dybantsa pulled down 10 rebounds.

Next up: Big 12 play

The win over Eastern Washington brings BYU’s non-conference schedule to a close. BYU finished non-conference play with a 12-1 record and is currently on a nine-game winning streak.

In December, Dybantsa averaged 27.8 points, eight rebounds, 5.7 assists, 2.3 steals, and shot 65.9% from the field.

AJ Dybantsa and the No. 10 BYU basketball team return to action on January 3 to open up Big 12 play at Kansas State in Manhattan.
