SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – Donovan Mitchell has been named to the NBA Social Justice Coalition. According to The Athletic’s Shams Charania, the Utah Jazz guard is one of five NBA players who will serve on the coalition’s board.

Portland Trail Blazers forward Carmelo Anthony, Los Angeles Lakers guard Avery Bradley, Milwaukee Bucks guard Sterling Brown, and Minnesota Timberwolves center Karl-Anthony Towns will join Mitchell on the committee.

Five NBA owners will also sit on the board. The Miami Heat’s Micky Arison, Los Angeles Clippers’ Steve Balmer, Oklahoma City Thunder’s Clay Bennett, Bucks Marc Lasry, and the Sacramento Kings Vivek Randadive will represent the NBA’s board of Governors.

Atlanta Hawks coach Lloyd Pierce and Philadephia 76ers coach Doc Rivers will represent coaches on the board.

“The NBA and NBPA agreed to create the Social Justice Coalition — group to advance equality and social justice — in aftermath of the Bucks leading teams walking out of games in late August,” According to a Charania tweet. “Adam Silver, Mark Tatum and Michele Roberts will also be on the Board, sources said.”

Mitchell, 24, is the youngest player on the NBA Social Justice Coalition.

Jazz Social Justice Participation

Mitchell isn’t the only member of the Jazz organization to sit on a committee to fight for social justice. In June, head coach Quin Snyder was named by the NBA Coaches Association to a group of league coaches that aimed to combat racism and inequality in NBA cities.

Snyder joined several San Antonio Spurs coach Gregg Popovich, Golden State Warriors coach Steve Kerr, former New York Knicks coach David Fizdale, Cleveland Cavaliers coach JB Bickerstaff, New Orleans Pelicans coach Stan Van Gundy, and Pierce on the committee.

“As a diverse group of leaders, we have a responsibility to stand up and speak out for those who don’t have a voice,” The memo read. “And to stand up and speak out for those who don’t feel it is safe to do so.”

More than 200 current and former NBA head and assistant coaches signed the memo.
