SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – If the NBA hopes to finish the 2019-2020 season, it may have to be willing play games late into the summer. Sunday night the Center for Disease Control released a recommendation that any event larger than 50 people be put on hold through the next eight weeks. That would mean any games featuring full rosters, coaching staffs, and necessary game operations members are recommended to be put on hold until mid-May.

ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski said the league is examining the possibility of teams returning to action in mid to late June, playing in arenas without fans.

Wojnarowski tweeted that team owners are believing the June date may be best-case scenario.

One of the many hurdles for NBA teams is finding enough open dates on their arena calenders to play the games. Most arenas use the summer to schedule concerts and other events to fill the dates between professional seasons.

As the NBA holds out hope that the league may return this summer, Wojnarowski, reporting with Malika Andrews also tweeted that the fate of the G-League season might not be so lucky.

In a tweet, Wojnarowski said NBA teams operating G-League affiliates expect the rest of the season to be canceled.

The cancelation would end a fairytale season for the Salt Lake City Stars who have the second-best record in the G-League and the best record in the Western Conference at 30-12. The regular season was due to end March 28 with the playoffs extending through April.

The Stars were led in scoring by Jazzman Rayjon Tucker who had played just three games with the team, averaging 20.3 points per game in his recent outings. Jazz two-way player Jarrell Brantley averaged 18.8 points.

How Do I Prevent It?

The CDC has some simple recommendations, most of which are the same for preventing other respiratory illnesses or the flu:

  • Avoid close contact with people who may be sick
  • Avoid touching your face
  • Stay home when you are sick
  • Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue and then throw the tissue in the trash
  • Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after going to the bathroom, before eating, and after blowing your nose, coughing or sneezing. Always wash your hands with soap and water if your hands are visibly dirty.
  • If soap and water are not readily available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol.

The CDC does not recommend wearing a facemask respirator to protect yourself from coronavirus unless a healthcare professional recommends it.
