Mitchell Throws Down Windmill Dunk Following Clear Path Foul Play

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Utah guard Donovan Mitchell threw down a vicious windmill dunk during the Jazz’s game against Indiana Pacers.

Mitchell’s slam came during the second quarter of the game on Wednesday, November 27.

Unfortunately, the slam didn’t count as the Pacers had committed a clear path foul on the play before Mitchell threw down the dunk.

The Pacers were up 38-32 when Mitchell stole the ball and sped down the floor toward the basket. Indiana’s Jeremy Lamb fouled the Jazz guard committing a clear path foul with 3:54 left in the 2nd quarter.

The NBA defines a clear path foul as “a personal foul against any offensive player during his team’s transition scoring opportunity in the following circumstances: the ball is ahead of the tip of the circle in the backcourt; no defender is ahead of the offensive player with the transition scoring opportunity; the player with the transition scoring opportunity is in control of the ball (or a pass has been thrown to him); and if the foul deprives his team of an opportunity to score.”

Mitchell made both free throws to make it 38-34 Pacers. The Jazz got the ball back after the free throws but failed to convert on the possession.

The Jazz guard had 6 points on 2-10 shooting in the first 24 minutes of the game. Mitchell added an assist, a steal, and a block to his halftime stat line.

Wednesday’s dunk wasn’t the first windmill that Mitchell has thrown down only for the dunk not to count. He slammed one down in April 2019 against the Charlotte Hornets without the basket counting for two points.

The Pacers led the Jazz at halftime 53-43.
