This Day In Jazz History: Jerry Sloan Records 1000th Win As Head Coach

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – On December 11, 2006, Utah Jazz head coach Jerry Sloan recorded his 1000th career victory as an NBA head coach.
The Jazz defeated the Dallas Mavericks 101-79 in Sloan’s milestone win. He was the fifth coach to reach the mark. He was third in all-time wins when he left coaching.
With the win, Utah moved to 16-5 on the season. The Jazz were led by Carlos Boozer who posted 31 points and 11 rebounds.
Jazz guard Deron Williams recorded 18 points and 7 assists. Andrei Kirilenko had 10 points, 2 boards, and 6 assists. Forward Matt Harpring led the bench with 15 points.

Mavericks star Dirk Nowitzki had 26 points and 10 rebounds in the loss.

Utah’s win over the Mavs was one of Sloan’s 1223 victories as a coach for the Jazz.
As an NBA head coach, Sloan compiled 1221 total wins. He is No. 2 all-time for the most wins with one franchise.
San Antonio head coach Greg Popovich passed Sloan for the most wins with a single franchise in February 2017.

Coach Sloan played in the NBA from 1965-1976. All but one of those seasons were spent with the Chicago Bulls.
After his playing career, Sloan coached for the Bulls from 1977-1982.
In 1985, Coach Sloan joined the Utah Jazz as an assistant coach. He took over for Frank Layden as head coach during the 1988-89 season.

He was the head coach of the Jazz until midway through the 2010-11 season.
