Utah Jazz depth takes another hit with loss of Ace Bailey

After scoring eight quick points, along with an assist, rebound, steal, and a block in the opening seven minutes against the Trail Blazers, Jazz rookie Ace Bailey took an elbow to the face from teammate Andersson Garcia while battling for a defensive rebound.

Bailey ran back on offense, but Jazz coach Will Hardy quickly called a timeout. The lottery pick then walked back to the locker room with a member of the training staff holding a towel over his nose and mouth.

The 19-year-old did not return, and the Jazz ruled him out at halftime with concussion symptoms.

Over his past 10 games, Bailey has averaged 16.7 points, 5.2 rebounds, 1.7 assists, and 1.1 steals in 31 minutes per game while shooting 42 percent from the field and 35 percent from three-point range.

The injury halted what had been Bailey’s best stretch of basketball this season, filling a larger role because of multiple injuries to the Jazz’s leading scorers.

With Bailey playing a critical role in the franchise’s future and needing every opportunity to develop before the season ends, the Jazz must hope their prized rookie does not remain in concussion protocol for long.

Lack of depth burns Jazz against Trail Blazers

The Jazz starters jumped out to a fast start against Portland, outscoring the Trail Blazers 8-0, 16-4, and eventually 33-15 to build their largest lead of the game.

Just as it appeared the Jazz might blow the game open, their lack of depth became evident.

With Lauri Markkanen, Jaren Jackson Jr., Walker Kessler, Jusuf Nurkic, Keyonte George, Blake Hinson, and John Konchar all ruled out before Friday’s game, and Bailey exiting in the first quarter, Hardy was left with a roster short on long-term NBA experience.

Neither Kevin Love nor Svi Mykhailiuk played, leaving Brice Sensabaugh, with 166 career games, as the most experienced player available.

Sophomores Cody Williams, Kyle Filipowski, and Isaiah Collier joined Sensabaugh and Bailey in the opening lineup, helping the Jazz build their early lead.

Once Hardy turned to his second unit, however, the team’s inexperience showed.

Oscar Tshiebwe, with 34 career games, led the bench in regular-season appearances. Elijah Harkless ranked second with 28.

The group also featured 10-day contract rookies Garcia, who made his first career appearance in Wednesday’s loss to the New York Knicks, and Bez Mbeng, who made his NBA debut against Portland.

“AG and Bez are bringing a ton to our group,” Hardy said of the rookies. “Their activity, their fight, is something that’s really bleeding into everybody.”

The pair combined for 10 points, seven rebounds, six assists, four steals, and two blocks, but it wasn’t enough to keep pace with the Trail Blazers.

Portland’s second unit outscored the Jazz bench 47-28, a major factor in the 10-point loss.

With 15 games remaining and the roster thinning at an alarming rate, the Jazz’s young starters will need to shoulder an even heavier load to keep games competitive down the stretch.
