Arkansas AD Hunter Yurachek criticizes ESPN for kickoff times against Utah, Georgia

SALT LAKE CITY — Arkansas athletic director Hunter Yurachek made clear Wednesday that he was not thrilled with the kickoff times assigned to two of the Razorbacks’ biggest early-season games.
The two kickoff times under fire: Sept. 12 game at Utah set for 9:15 p.m. CT on ESPN and a Sept. 19 home matchup against defending SEC champion Georgia set for 11 a.m. CT on ABC.
That left Yurachek frustrated enough to release a statement addressing the schedule, particularly the late-night window for the Utah game and the early local start for Georgia.
“I am extremely concerned and displeased about the recently released kickoff times for our football program in consecutive weeks this September and the impact it will have on the well-being of our student-athletes,” Yurachek wrote.
“I have formally requested that the SEC office and ESPN aggressively pursue an alternative solution for one or both kickoff times during these consecutive weeks. The focus must be on the well-being of the game’s participants – not the bottom line of our media partner.”

Utah gets a true late-window showcase
From Utah’s perspective, the Arkansas kickoff time is nowhere near as painful. In fact, many Utah fans consider that a blissfully ideal kickoff time because night games at Rice-Eccles Stadium are a spectacle.
The time slot gives the Utes a national ESPN window against an SEC opponent. For a program entering a new era under Morgan Scalley, that matters. Utah gets a standalone-style night atmosphere at Rice-Eccles Stadium, a Power Four opponent traveling west and a chance to make an early statement before Big 12 play fully takes over the schedule.
The matchup also carries some novelty. The Razorbacks and Utes will be playing each other for the first time. That is also part of what makes the scheduling frustration notable.
For Utah, the Arkansas kickoff is fantastic. It gives the Utes a national stage, a strong home atmosphere and a chance to introduce the Scalley era to a broader audience against an SEC opponent.
Georgia game is the Arkansas’ frustration
For Arkansas, the reaction is different. The Razorbacks are looking at a demanding travel spot, a late finish for their fans, and then a major home game against Georgia that kicks before noon the next weekend.
A 9:15 p.m. CT start at Utah means the Razorbacks will be playing deep into the night for fans back home in Arkansas. One week later, Arkansas returns to Fayetteville for one of its most attractive home games of the season against Georgia, only for that game to be placed in the 11 a.m. CT window.
Arkansas returns home Sept. 19 to open SEC play against Georgia. That game will air on ABC, which is a major television placement. But the 11 a.m. CT kickoff is the part that bothered Yurachek.
For schools in the Central Time Zone, 11 a.m. kickoffs are a regular source of tension. They are great for television inventory, but they compress the game-day experience for fans, students, tailgaters and visiting recruits. When the opponent is Georgia, the desire for a later window is obvious.

The Bottom Line
This is one of the tradeoffs of modern college football. Television exposure has never been more valuable. A road game at Utah on ESPN and a home game against Georgia on ABC are not bad assignments from a visibility standpoint. Arkansas will be placed in front of national audiences in back-to-back weeks.
Arkansas wanted better kickoff treatment for two of its biggest September games.
Utah, meanwhile, gets exactly the kind of early-season setting it should want: an SEC opponent, a national ESPN window and a night game at Rice-Eccles Stadium.
For the Razorbacks, the schedule may be inconvenient. For the Utes, it is a fantastic opportunity.
