How to watch, stream and listen: BYU’s Big 12 opener vs. Arizona

PROVO — BYU football is 1-0 after a blowout victory over FCS foe Utah Tech, but the 14th-ranked Cougars expect a different challenge the rest of the year.

That starts with Saturday’s Big 12 opener against Arizona (1:30 p.m. MT, FOX).

The Cougars (1-0) got a breakout performance from freshman Legend Glasker, who scored three first-half touchdowns to help BYU roll to a 63-7 win in Provo. In addition to 81 all-purpose yards, Glasker’s hat trick is the most touchdowns by a true freshman at BYU since Jamaal Williams scored four against Georgia Tech in 2012.

But don’t overlook the BYU defense, which got one of four turnovers on the night on the first play of the game through Tre Alexander’s interception and held the Trailblazers (0-2) to 49 rushing yards, 135 through the air, and 3.3 yards per play while gashing the front with 308 rushing yards and 6.7 yards per rush attempt.

“That kind of set the tone for the night,” said defensive end Hunter Clegg, one of 26 players to record a tackle.

“The whole place just erupted immediately, and gave us a lot of good momentum,” he added. “The vibes were high, tons of energy, and I felt like we were able to play loose, play free, have fun and make plays. That’s exactly what you want to do as a defense.”

Saturday will be a stricter test of the Cougars’ defense in the first FBS game for both squads in an early Big 12 opener that helps accommodate the Cougars’ Oct. 17 nonconference tilt against Notre Dame. Here’s how to watch the game on TV, radio, and online:

What to know about Arizona

The Wildcats are 1-0 after a 36-7 season-opening win over in-state FCS foe Northern Arizona, when Noah Fifita moved into second in program history with 9,445 career passing yards. The Arizona defense held the Lumberjacks to -7 rushing yards, marking the first time in 20 years that the Wildcats have held an opponent to negative rushing in a full game.

Arizona hasn’t won a road opener since lifting the lid off the 2022 season with a 38-20 victory at San Diego State. The Wildcats are 48-66-1 in road openers in program history.

Conference play, already?

Saturday will be the first Big 12 game of the year for both programs, coming in Week 2 of the regular season.

It will be the earliest start to conference play for BYU since Sept. 11, 2010, when BYU played Air Force in week 2 of its final season as a member of the Mountain West. The Cougars started conference play in Week 4 during each of their first three seasons since joining the league.

BYU is 2-1 in Big 12 openers under Sitake, and 17-10 in league play the past three years.

BYU vs. Arizona series history

The Cougars and Wildcats are meeting for the 28th time all-time, with BYU on a current five-game winning streak dating back to Sitake’s first game as head coach of his alma mater in 2016. Foour of the five games have been decided by a single possession, including last year’s 33-27 double-overtime thriller in Tucson.

The two programs also shared a conference affiliation from 1962 until 1977, when Arizona left the Western Athletic Conference for what was then the Pac-10.

The last time both teams played in Provo, LaVell Edwards Stadium hosted Big Noon Kickoff in 2024, preceding BYU’s 41-19 victory.
