BYU Releases Renderings For LaVell Edwards Stadium Improvements

PROVO, Utah – Brigham Young University has released renderings for improvements to be made at LaVell Edwards Stadium before the start of the 2019 season.
The university will add structural sections to the four corners of the stadium that will connect the existing four independent stadium stands at the mezzanine level.
No additional seating will be added, but the improvements will allow fans to walk between the different sections of stands without having to return to ground level.
The project will increase the number of restrooms in the stadium by adding women’s, men’s and family friendly restrooms on the north and south mezzanine levels.
BYU officials said the change will improve accessibility, safety and the overall experience at football games and other events at LaVell Edwards Stadium.
The 2019 home football schedule includes games against Utah, USC, Washington, Boise State, Liberty and Idaho State.

LaVell Edwards Stadium has undergone several improvements and renovations in the last 15 years. In 2003 the university added luxury seating to the east stands. The new seats replaced bleacher seating in what had traditionally been a student area with blue and white stadium seats/ The color placement spelled out “BYU.”
A new video board was added above the north end zone in 2008, matching the one already in place over the south end zone.
Before the 2012 season, the Cougars added new high definition LED video boards to both end zones, and digital ribbon displays in the same area.
The stadium got a fresh coat of blue paint over what had been concrete elevator shafts, with the oval “Y” logo at the tops.
In 2013 the ROC student section was combined in the southeast corner of the stands, spanning the east and south end zones.
At the start of the 2018 season, a new social media display and digital ribbon was added to the east stands.
Once known as Cougar Stadium, it was renamed in honor of legendary coach LaVell Edwards in his last game in Provo. Gordon B. Hinckley, then the president of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, which owns the university, spoke to the team and fans.
Going into that game on November 18, 2000 against New Mexico, President Hinckley advised the team, “Don’t muff it,” implying a loss would spoil the festivities – not to mention giving Edwards his first losing season since 1973 – his second year as the BYU coach.
The Cougars have a 82-29 record (0.739) record at LaVell Edwards since the stadium was renamed. In the last 18 seasons, BYU has been undefeated at home four times, and suffered just one home loss during seven of those seasons.
