BYU LB Kavika Fonua Halts San Diego State Drive In Red Zone With Forced Fumble

PROVO, Utah – BYU linebacker Kavika Fonau ended a San Diego State drive inside the red zone when he punched the ball out for a forced fumble.

Fonua and the No. 18 Cougars hosted the Aztecs at LaVell Edwards Stadium on Saturday, December 12.
With 12:35 remaining in the third quarter, SDSU had the ball at the BYU 10-yard line on 1st and Goal when Kaegun Williams fumbled after Fonua punched the ball free.
BYU’s Seleti Fevaleaki recovered the fumble and gave the Cougars possession at their own 16-yard line.

The play ended an SDSU drive inside the red zone for the second time during the contest.
Earlier in the game, BYU linebacker Drew Jensen intercepted a pass to stop the Aztecs inside the red zone.
It was the second forced fumble caused by Fonau in his BYU career.

On the next possession, the Cougars drove 80 yards over 13 plays and 6:48 for a 29-yard field goal by Jake Oldroyd.
The score gave BYU a 20-14 lead with 5:47 left in the third quarter.
